Excuse me?

Seems like someone wasn't paying attention in class.

A column lock bypass is the ONLY way to keep an M6 from locking up. The recall for the M6 just flashes your PCM so that your fuel pump shuts off if the column lock doesn't unlock. You still get to play roulette with your steering wheel every time you shut down without a CLB on board.

Wooo....hold on to your tail pipes there folks. Lets get this right. On A4's the CL is disabled all together. On M6's the recall shuts off fuel in "the event of a Column Lock". Maybe my terms were a little off, but I didn't just sprout out of the ground yesterday.

BTW, Cool your heels buddy, I'm the the one to be aiming your "throttle" at.

Before I was a forum member this happened to me on my 98 m6 and it cost me $1018. I wish I new of corvette forum sooner. buy the bypass. BTW I later did alot of research on this and it all depends on the year and trans. in your vette but the bypass will work for both mn6 and a4.so don't go jumping down each others throats.

OK, call me silly here, but I'm a new kid in town and need a little 'splanin on this here topic. What exactly does the Column Lock By-pass do & is this something I should be looking into ? How does one know if they might already have one?

Oh, and thanks in advance for the education

First of all, go to the sticky that's posted in the C5 Tech area.....
The bypass, in plain terms, is a "simulator" of sorts. It replaces and simulates the column lock actuator motor inside the column. It's nothing more that a latching relay with a couple of diodes to maintain current flow in the correct direction depending on the make-break state of the relay. It fools the BCM into thinking it's talking to the actual motor, so that the BCM doesn't get confused and start setting codes that could shut off the fuel. Meanwhile, the actuator motor is still sitting inside the column, but is totally disconnected from any power and BCM signals. If you have the manual trans, and do NOT have a bypass installed, you'll hear the actuator motor every time you turn the ignition key to "Run" or "Off". It's that funny, half-second whirring noise coming from the column. What's actually going on in there is that the motor has a worm-gear drive that "screws" the locking pin up through holes or slots in the lock plate, thus locking the column.

Hope this helps...

Mike

Yes your terms were a "little off" which is the reason your post was inaccurate. Big difference between CLB (Column Lock Bypass kit) and Recall. Don't jump on someone for correcting misinformation.

I am a believer in the phrase "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Now it's broke.

Once again:

1997-2004 MN6 - the CLB is highly recommended as the recall will not prevent column lock

1997-2000 A4 - CLB or recall your option. Just know that some 97-98 models have difficulties accepting the CLB and will cause "Pull key..." messages on a regular basis.

2001-2004 A4 - the factory took care of your problem.

Going to the dealer tomorrow, hopefully to clear all codes, and the CLB is on order. I've also ordered the CAGS bypass and a cleaning kit for my Blackwing. Car now has 40K on it, what else will the dealer want to do?

On my A4 2000 had the dealer remove the k harness after getting all the pull key B.S., plate is in for lock pin and I'll do the clb to eliminate the actuator from functioning. That'll cover me ..
