I was able to try my hand at driving a NASCAR-style race car a little over a year ago. My girlfriend gave me a gift certificate the Christmas before last for a 10-lap driving experience. I ended up doing it at Charlotte Motor Speedway after getting rained out at Kentucky Motor Speedway. The drive from Indiana to North Carolina was alot of fun behind the wheel of my 03 MY Coupe. The excitement grew with each passing mile as I knew that it would be a real thrill to get behind the wheel of an actual race car with all the fixin's. Here's a pic of the actual cars used.
Here I am shortly after running 12 laps at Charlotte. It's hard to tell, but I'm sweating like a pig! It was HOT inside the race car. So hot that I actually felt a little claustrophic once I was strapped in with a full-face helmet. This was unexpected since I served on submarines and never had any problems like that before. It really made me appreciate the pro's that run hundreds of laps week after week.
Did that at California Speedway in Fontana two years ago. Best time I've ever had behind the wheel. Went through "Drive Tech" They actually let us pass, and a couple of us were able to run laps at 165!! Was having a wonderful time until I shredded a right rear tire going into turn one. First time at going 100 plus backwards down into the dirt. Great thrill.
Did you not drive your Vette on the track as well?
We were in Charlotte 2 summers ago and toured the track in a bus... There was a Vette there on the track as well as a few other vehicles... Someone said when you do the NASCAR thing, (they had 6-8 cars lined up to go as well) that you also were able to drive your own car on the track... All hearsay though... Who knows? Plus, I've "heard" that Verts aren't allowed either... I suppose it depends on the track, how fast they let you run, etc...
