Bingo! That's exactly the culprit. BTW--That's my car. We were not driving too fast. No lack of attention. See comments from other drivers on the cruise (original event thread).

I've taken that same corner at twice the speed. I knew the tires were getting down there. I had auto-crossed the car a week earlier and didn't realize how much tread I had scrubbed off since last looking at the tread about 3 weeks ago. Marginal tread left, cold morning, second turn of the cruise (cold tires) . . . Turn wheel left . . . Gross under-steer . . . Oh @*&#%! . . . Crunch!

Bottom line, BIG screw up on my part not getting new tires mounted sooner (I actually have the new front tires sitting in my garage). Looks much worse than it was! Don't think we were going over 30mph, hit the guardrail at maybe 20mph (actually a very soft impact). But the Vette is so low it went UNDER the guardrail. I was indeed VERY lucky to walk away without a scratch, and even luckier to not have had a passenger in the car!

What appears to be a cliff in that one shot is actually only about a 12ft drop into a small creek.

And, no I didn't "get into it" on the curve. See previous post.

Anyone looking for a set of 06' Z06 wheels??? J/K Glad to see you are Ok.. man those pics look painful. But the car did what it had to do to save you! Not to long ago... I was on a run with my uncle in his Z car club ( Nissan Z's ) along with a few vettes that I invited, and a few NSX's. One of the NSX's had incurred a similar fate with cold tires, and low tread. We took one of the turns going up a mountain pass road, and he turned, the car went strait... about 35mph. He went under the guard rail, and then rolled 3 or 4 times down the mountain. He somehow walked out with few broken finders, and a few cuts. How he made it under the guard rail, I will never know. I was right behind him, top down, and enjoying the colors in the trees changing. Scary site, my heart goes out to you and your car. Great group of people there... looks like the whole group of you stopped!

Glad you said it - and not me. I havn't had the heart. My first though when I saw the pictures (after I found out Dave was OK) was, "Wow, the wheels went right under the rail with no damage..... Hmmm, wonder what he wants for em?" Dave's a great guy with a sense of humor, but I figured that question could wait a week. Now that it's out there, those are some nice seats you have there Dave

Not sure if I'll be selling the wheels and seats. Depends on if I rebuild the car or go another route. But hey, anybody need a windshield or hood? Just a few nicks and chips!

Yikes! Glad no one was hurt. I live in Campbell and know that Auto Zone parking lot well. Was that curve just after Big Basin Way in Saratoga?

Good thing you didn't end up in the creek.

Dave,
Steve (Bay Area Zaino) is our club sponsor, so I am sure I could get you a deal on some Z95478545822245. A couple squirts, and the car will be good as new.
