After some time away, I'm back, but had to create a new logon. Hope everyone is well.
I was hoping you could help me out. I started prepping the car for the upcoming season and noticed that my door panel was starting to peel (i.e. the vinyl trim is becoming unglued around the driver's armrest and the passenger's armrest). Has anyone else exprienced this problem? Is there a TSB out on this? I heard this was a problem with the C5. I've had it since new (a 2000) and it just started. Although I have extended warranty until June 2006, this probably won't be covered under it, but this just shouldn't happen. If anyone else had this happen to them outside the warranty period, were you able to get this repaired?
The more information I can get on this, the stronger a case I can put to GM that this should be repaired free of cost. I'm pretty ticked off that this problem even occurred.
Also, if I can't get GM to foot the bill, has anyone reskinned their door panels or do you know where I can get a pair cheap if I have to go that route (other than the obvious scrap yards).

Hasn't happened to mine yet, but I have heard of it happening to other cars. If you don't want to go to the expense of a new door panel, consider getting a set of the padded armrests from Vette Essentials - I have them on mine and they cover up the armrest area and feel much better than the stock setup.
Thanks for the info. but I'm not sure if I could use it to cover up the peel. Its peeling right between where the cover would sit and the door panel. Looks like I'm one of the unfortunate ones. Perhaps an upholstery shop can provide the remedy.
I have this same problem on my '97...noticed it about a year or so ago and has been driving me nuts. The car has 22K miles (have owned it since new) and has spent most of it's life in the garage...there is no excuse for this.
Anyone have any idea how much new panels are and how hard are they to put on? I have been putting off calling the dealer as I am afraid to ask...
Unfortunately, this is not uncommon. I believe it is largely on earlier (pre-2000) cars. If so, either it is a problem that is time-driven and it will catch all of us or perhaps there was a change in processing on the later cars. Check the threads for this forum. I have seen this before.
If peeling is the seperation of the vinyl from the foam about the armrest area of the DP , then you are not alone , my 97 was like that when I purchased the car .
took it to the best apholstery shop in Knoxville , no way to fix it !
solution :
wanted to convert my car from a firethorn red to black anyway ,
so I patiently waited for a set of panels out of a 03 come up on Ebay ,
black on black , And BAM! I was the highest bidder , they were like new . I think $ 200.00 for the set plus shipping.
Caution :
Make sure the top and bottom of the door panels you are buying match
your colors , I don't think you can re-use the bottom section of your door . just replace the whole thing !

My 97 did the same thing, first on the passenger side and now on the drivers side. Gene may be able to help you out with a used replacement. I replaced the passenger side with a new panel through Fichtner Chevrolet. I think I paid $375 for it after shopping locally and the lowest price was around $600.
They do have the best prices and great service! Fichtner has never failed to beat my local dealers prices by at least 30%
My local dealer does send me service reminders to have the tires on my C5 rotated though!
Mine are now doing it too. . I have a 04 Z06 with 17k miles, so I am hoping the dealer will replace them at no charge for me. Has anyone had theirs replaced under warranty?
common issue. mine are doing it too. and what makes it most annoying is when you push in on that part or rest an arm on it then it makes this sticky weird sound whre it tries to stick back down but fails hmmmoh well...

I had a headliner in an older car (non-vette) come loose after I had washed my floor mats and put them back in the car while still damp. The moisture caused the headliner glue to fail and come loose.
Others have mentioned that using armor-all type cleaners/conditioners could possibly cause difficulties with the glue in the dash/doors.

I have the same problem in my 98. I heard a suggestion but have not tried it yet...sounds like it might work though..tell me if I'm crazy. Use some kind of plastic glue or whatever glue and put it into a hypodermic needle to inject it under the vinyl and then..wham! Glue it back down!

i heard this suggestion too but still havent gotten the gonads to try it. maybe someone with a junk door panel form a salv yard can at least try it to see??
... Tracy heard it from me... I used this technique on an Acura Integra door panel (they suffer the same fate) with good results. It does leave a bit a of a pin ***** hole (not so noticeable). You have to use a large bore needle. I will have to take a look and see what glue I wound up using. It was a trail and error deal to find a thin enough adhesive that would hold in the nasty hot summer heat....I think I used a two part expoxy... but it ended up being a quick and easy fix. You have to message what ever goo you use into place, but once you get it spread out (and I quote) Wham! Fixed.
