Just bought an '04 Z06 and notice that the vents have an odor when you turn on the AC. Anyone have any suggestions? Where is the air intake for the passenger compartment?
Go to the auto shop's AC section. Usually they have a can of vent/ duct system cleaner for about $6. Turn the AC on, let it loose into the passenger side intake in the car. Then spary the stuff into that intake jsut below the windshield on the driver side. Do this with the AC on full and the doors closed. After you finish, leave the windows open to get the strong mint smell out of the car. Took me about a day. I have no sense of smell but my wife says all the "horrible" odors are gone and it has the new car smell again.

I had read somewhere that the odor can be caused by moisture on the A/C coil (near the heater core) which promotes growth of bateria and/or mold.
There is also a GM service bulletin (might have been for our 2000 TransAm) which has a whole procedure for cleaning the outside of the coil and sanitizing it and applying an anti-bateria agent.
As a preventive measure, we always switch the system to heat only with the fan still running, when we're about 5 minutes from home, to give the outside of the A/C coil a chance to dry off, hopefully preventing the problem from ever happening.
Under the passegenger side of the dash. Get the AC blowing on full with the recirculation option and hold a tissue or somehting light in your hand. You'll be able to locate it when you notice the tissue being sucked up towards the dash. Worked for me
Ok I must be completely retarded, or something in my system isn't working right. I can't find it!! I have probably spent half an hour under there now with a tissue and without, and I can't locate it. Do I need to take that kick panel off? Well I did anyway, lol. Still can't find it. If someone could give a pic or specific instructions or description, that would be great.
Cuz I am totally at a loss here, and in the mean time the car stinks every time I hit the AC....

Send me a PM with your email addy. I have some pics of the area at the house.
You also shouldn't have to take any panels off. Another thing you can do If you bought the can of vent cleaner is to unload about 3/4 of it into the intake vent under the windshield with the air on high and doors and windows closed. Then, after a few minutes, switch to the recirculation. There will be enough of the chemical in the cab to do the job and get you a great buzz if you're not careful. Make sure to air the car out before you drive it too much. A friend of mine did this and his malodorous problem is a thing of the past.
