I think I have a similar sensation, but only notice that in the morning when its fairly cold out leaving my driveway as well. I never experience this at other time, so I just attribute that to the cold. Must be the morning Island due ... lol
Does anybody know why it does it? I always thought it was because the diff. is cold and the gears are binding?
Wide tires. When you have a wide contact patch, and the tire is going around a short radius, the inside and outside parts of the contact patch don't move at the same speed, so something has to "skip." The inner tire (i.e., the left front tire if your wheel is hard left) is most prone since it'll be turned the most.
When it first happened to me I thought it was a parking brake binding up, or possibly my steering rack about to fall out.
It might have something to do with the way the front tires are aligned, since my '90 vette also had wide front tires but never had this behavior.

5500 eh? we're even!! I am close to 5600 actually!
It is too fun a car not to drive it daily. It's going to the car wash shortly to receive a high pressure spray(I REFUSE to drive it THROUGH a car wash, too high a chance of scratches) to remove the grime.
i had the same issue with my 96 Impala SS - i was told it was the wide tires and the sharp turning radius. it freaked me out everytime it happened, but i guess it's nothing but a thang
You may also be experiencing "rearend chatter". This happens when the posi is cold, and there is not quite enough friction modifier in the rear. The posi then binds a little and you get a "hop" sensation.
Again, another normal Vette thing. You could try adding a little frction modifier to the rear end..
I had this same sensation that you describe, and this seemed to alleviate most of it.
