Default road condtions advice needed

I am just about to pick up a 2004 MY ZO6 in Detroit and have been considering flying up to drive it home for fun.

Looking at the weather has got me thinking what are conditions like on the route I would take back to Florida (currently 75 blue skys and loving it)?

Here is the map outline via yahoo maps:

http://maps.yahoo.com/dd_result?newa...fl&tcountry=us

If some folks who live along these routes have tips and advice on the conditions please let me know.

Thanks

Sam

Default Don't Go Back!!

HA! Just teasin - retired and moved to Georgia from Maitland, FL just last year. Hated all the traffic there - moved to small town nw of Macon - you can REALLY enjoy a corvette on these little country backroads!! Take some time on your way back and get off the main road - you're going to be going "near" some beautiful driving country.
ENJOY THE NEW VETTE! A friend of mine in Deltona also just got one last Friday!!

Default Driving your baby in the middle of winter from Detroit?

I wouldn't do that! Have her wrapped up tight on the back of a semi and her shipped. Snow, Hail, potholes, accidents, rocks flying everywhere. Protect her like there's no tomorrow. You'll thank yourself later.

My family and I drove from florida to michigan and back recently in an RV. I would reccomend going through Indiana to get to I-75. That takes quite a few hours off the trip. When you get to Florida, Take I-10 or I-4 to cut across the state and get on I-95. The only real problems we really had were with the truckers tailgating and the rain. Most of Georgia is a construction zone, too. I jsut ran all the way up I-95 last night and it sucked very much bad. 75 has a little bit less construction/congestion I belive. I don't think the crossing the mountains in Tennessee (near Chatanooge, I think) will be as much trouble in the Z, though. Not sure. As far as the Georgia/Florida highways, I run up and down those all the time and only have a problem in heavy rain or when the truckers get stupid.

Hope this helps.

Make it an enjoyable ride home. I'd be looking at the Tail of the Dragon and other infamous roads if I were you. I picked up mine in Michigan almost 2 years ago. Unfortunately, I had to go around Lake Erie to get home to NY state I ended up driving my brand new Vette in one of the famous Buffalo lake effect snowstorms . It looks like you're safe from that on your planned route. Let us know how you make out.

use weather.com
There is an interstate driving conditions link...
You type in starting and ending points... they tell you the conditions

here's the link http://www.weather.com/activities/dr...e/?from=drivfl

Good Luck, enjoy the drive

I would seriously consider making this drive without getting on an Interstate at all. Take the extra time to get to know your new baby!

Default Road Suggestions

I'll have to give a "conditionary" 2nd to doing the Dragon's Tail.... I just went to their website "tailofthedragon.com" and guess what?? They got ....SNOW! It's a beautiful place to drive your new car, but not after the sand and gravel trucks have coated the road!!
Mkae sure you check their web site for current road conditions, before heading that way!

Perhaps you've already "...been there and done that..." but a stop at Bowling Green wouldn't take you too far out of your way.

Congrats on the new car and have a fun & safe trip home....

You didn't mention exactly when you are planning on doing this trip.

I make the run up from Raleigh,NC to Michigan pretty regular and your biggest threats this time of year will be hitting lake effect snow across northern Ohio on the Turnpike (I80) and the thru the mountains of West Virginia and short part of Virginia. If the weather is clear and no fronts coming thru you should be fine. The route you have planned out works best for going to eastern Florida.

Good luck.

Definitely drive it home. Nothing like a good road trip in a Corvette.

If I didn't have to come back in a couple of months, I'd be leaving as soon as I could. Three weeks ago I took a drive (in a minivan with the family) to Florida for a week. The roads and weather on the way down were perfect for the vette. Only problem was, I had to come back to Michigan the next week, and we hit one heck of a snow storm through Indiana and Michigan. Vette would never have made it back.

I had a car shippped enclosed trailer for just a 75 mile distance.
Why take the chance from Detroit to Florida. Have fun driving it after it arrives.

If you have the time, go ahead and fly up and drive back. Gives you a great opportunity to get the feel of the car and any dirt/grime that gets on it can be cleaned off.

I just drove from Chicago to Detroit and then Providence RI by way of Ohio and PA. The roads were great all the way back. Not even any snow on the ground at all. I would imagine that from RI south would have to be the same. Go for it. Roadtrip!

Default Thanks to the best people I know

I have to say I am just blown away by all the great input from amazing, smart, kind people on the corvette forum.

I deal with all kinds of people, all walks of life, under some of the most stressful situations you can imagine.

All of you are just amazing. If all the world was like the corvette forum what a wonderful world it would be!

Thanks again. I will digest all the tips and watch the weather. I think I am going to go get the baby but will have to get someone to watch my baby!

PEace,

Sam
