I read the articles written by Mike Mercury and EvilTwin (http://mikemercury.home.att.net/sound.htm). I went to Lowes and picked up the materials I need. Tomorrow I'm into the garage to do this mod. I took a ride with the vette today and paid particular attention to the the road noise coming into the car. Most of it is from the rear area, especially the tires. Once completed I'm going to take the same route I drove before the project and see how much of an improvement It makes.
Having thought about this for some time..I keep wondering why G.M., after all these years, has not addressed the interior noise issue, given the price tag these cars sell for. I'd be happy to pay an additional $$$ for the car with a quieter interior from the factory rather than having to do it myself later.
I’m sure the main reason GM did not add insulation is for the weight savings. GM cut weight everywhere they could (lots of aluminum, plastic, balsa wood etc) to give us a great performing sports car for $50,000. And if we compared the C5 to exotic sport cars and the viper I’m sure they are all close in interior noise.
I already did the Frost King Mod and added some Dynomat Extreame and it made a huge difference on the road. Plus it gives you a sense of accomplishment and allows you to "bond" with your vette.
Tip- wear some thin gloves or be extra careful with the metal edges- sharp, sharp, sharp! Use a credit card or a roller to press the edges down. A great mod and really helps with road noise.

Have fun!
This is the exact reason for the lack of insulation... in fact here is some insider information.. Two of the prime design directives for a C5 were make it lighter, and stay within budget.
While prototyping the interior stowage panels we used several types of substrates, We took a specific polymer panel to prelaunch and designed the panel locks for this substrate. They were designed to snap in...We needed to remove some more weight from the car.. so among other things, we changed the polymer panel to a press board panel and saved a few grams. This created a problem in process because the locks did not snap in place anymore. Build was weeks away, so all of the locks (Already made) on the stowage panels had to be glued in. So you see weight was as critical as budget, and at this point the cost to glue was not as important as the weight reduction...keeping the car gas tax free was very very important.
You will not read this insider information anywhere.
Pretty good selection of pics you shot. I did start the soundproofing project late yesterday. As of tonight, I have finished the rear section and gutted the rest..seats, trim and rugs. Tomorrow morning I'll start insulating. Most guys in here are probably wondering what's taking me so long....just working slow. It's actually a fun project...pays well too. The last guy that owned it must have had holes in his pockets. I found enough loose change to take my wife out to lunch! I'll post more later for those who might be following this project. Jake T.
