Default Head/cam Install......

Does anybody know how much it costs for a heads/cam install? I was told 28 hours at $70 an hour. So 2k for the install. Does this sound right?

28 hours seems like a lot of work for something that routine. I think the rate is about $1000ish for the H/C install.

Thanks guys. I thought that was a lot. Looks like I need to call around a little more.

2k labor is a tad high for California but not by much. You can find $1500 installs at a top tuner in California. Check around.

That's ridiculous. Me and a buddy did mine in 16 hours (Sat and Sun) and that included lunch breaks! You need to keep looking; orjust do it yourself and save the $. If you can turn a wrench and follow directions it is E-Z!
Good Luck!

So, if you took an hour for lunch each day, that's 14 hours, times 2 workers = 28 hours of labor.

Don't confuse me with that 'new' math... I was mostly watching and handing my buddy tools. Wrenched on the easy stuff like changing to SVO 30lb injectors while he torqued the ARP head bolts. (for example). My bud could have done it by himself in the same 2-day time frame. Oh yea; only 30 or so minutes for lunch! (My bud's mom dropped by for a while on Sat but did not actually touch anything; do we gotta count her too?)

I "assisted" my mechanic friend and it was done at his shop, I pretty much just handed him tools and helped him with the heavy stuff. He did the heads/cam/oil pump/timing chain/pulley PLUS Longtubes+Xpipe in 14 hours including one lunch break, and that was his first time ever doing the H/C swap on a small block.

So yah, I'd say the place is trying to rip you off.

Of course I dont expect the shop not to make there money. Does anybody know what shops average as far as hours charged? 28 hours does seem like a lot to me, but a mechanic I'm not. Thanks very much to everyone who responded.

That sounds about right. Look for a "private" installer, thats probably the route ill go. For an experienced mechanic a cam install only cam be knocked out in 4-5hrs alone.

Give Andy a call at A & A, he will shoot you the straight scoop

I know that they don't do this every day but they did Dirty Howies H/C in a days time, don't know how many guys or how long the day was

He told me they like to keep the car for a few days after a H/C to put a few miles on it to be sure everything is what it should be.

I know Andy is trustworthy. I sent him an e-mail last night. Still waiting to hear from him. I know he's buried.

I would say that that is in the ballpark. The valvelash adjustment takes a long time, because of the bleed down of the lifters every 15 minutes of waiting. It is the final thing next to dyno tuning. I'm anxious to fire it up by this point.
