Selling my vette. I have bought and sold quite a few cars over the years. Just curious why the first question from a potential buyer is..."Why are you selling it?"...
As a buyer, I have never asked. As a seller, It never fails to be one of the first, if not THE FIRST, question.

To me the obvious answer is they are trying to determine from your answer is "something wrong" with it. In other words "Has it been rode hard and put up wet" one time too many and will I just be buying your problems?

Why are you drinking beer while contemplating selling your Vette? Sounds like someone wants to keep their car. I say avoid the question and don't sell it.
I suspect most buyers think they will get an honest answer, but I’m sure they will never hear the seller tell them that “it’s a real POS and I’m putting much too much money into it for maintenance and repairs”…What the buyer wants to hear…”my wife and I are expecting a baby and the Corvette will no longer suit our needs”.

just tell 'em last week you were changing the oil, and got interrupted in the middle of your work. Later that day you went to starbucks for a cup of coffee, and forgot to put oil in it. You're worried something might go wrong in the future, and want to sell it because you can still buy a minivan with the money.

I've asked that question every time I bought a used car. It's a legitimate question. I don't always expect to get an honest answer but sometimes you'd be surprised.
When I bought my Vette - I asked why. His honest answer to me was that he didn't want to have to continue making payments on it while it was in storage (Chicago winter), and that he wanted to buy a newer Z06 in the Spring.
If I asked the question and the seller told my to mind my own F'n business or refused to answer - I'd say see ya'! Good luck with the sale of your car.
Oh, and I think I spelled everything correctly, used proper sentence structure and grammar - did I do well?
It's an opening question that sets up a dialogue ...
If the response had been its been a great car and no problems that is easily verified when you ask for the sevice records or have a dealer run the VIN for the history...

I agree that it is an honest question. When I was shopping for my vette I asked it of every for sale by owner car I looked at. As an example one guy that I asked was real pissy about it, I think his wife was making him sell it. Bad vibes from this guy so I walked away. Another car I looked at I asked the owner and he proceeded to tell me how this is his hobby. He has a list of cars he would like to own. He spends the winter looking for that car finds it and drives it thru the summer then sells in fall so he can get his next car. The question lead to a fun conversation with a guy that loves cars. It became quite clear that this guy took care of his cars. Purchased the vette from him and am very happy with the deal..

I have to agree. While you may not get a real honest answer to this question, especially if there are some problems, it can lead to other answers that can help you make up your mind.
