Default Key fob question

I was wondering if there are any compatibility issues with the different year key fobs. I know the newer ones don’t have a passive mode, but I never use mine anyway. So my question is if I don't care about passive mode, will any C5 key fob work with my '98?

I'm not too sure, but for my 2000 I know I HAVE to use the # that is on the back of my fob -- there is no alternate that I know of (and I looked based on the cost of replacing my fob!). There have been posts on this in the past (not sure how successful you'll be with the stellar search function though). Maybe someone else will chime in???

1997 through 2000 are the same even though 2000 doesn't have passive mode... 2001 through 2004 are the same... hope this helps..

This is how the remotes break down for the years.
97-99
2000
01-04
NOTE: They are not interchangable between the three designs.
However, it has been reported that some have had success using the 2000 remote with the 97-99 C5s.
