I posted this in the Tech forum too but...a couple days ago my car has started making this awful noise coming from the engine compartment. It sounds like a fan is hitting something while spinning (although I don’t think that’s what it is). It happens during any kind of acceleration at first...then once I let off and try the same acceleration it wont do it or it will be a lot quieter. Could this be a belt slipping or any kind of belt issue? I don’t think it’s an internal engine issue because it doesn't happen during every acceleration...and the engine runs fine and doesn't feel like it has reduced power. Any ideas what’s wrong??
The AC was on when I heard this noise...but I think the AC is always on because the climate control is in the AUTO setting. I'll have to make sure the AC is off and see if I hear it...
No, its my daily driver....the belts are worn and squeek so thats why I'm thinking it might be a belt slipping? I've been reading a lot about the balancer pulley and if it wobbles it can throw a belt...it shimmies but..not a whole lot.
I need to replace my belts and maybe it will fix this noise... I might try and record it and if it comes out..I'll post it.
I just took it out for a drive and I noticed that I dont think its coming from the engine.... It sounds like maybe something under the car is loose. It doesn't happen in Neutral, I gave it a good rev to 4krpm (under normal operating temp) and I didn't hear a thing but my squeaky pully/belt.
Did you install new headers, cats and X pipe. It's possible that stuff loosened up and shifted and is hitting the heat shield in the foward tunnel area. When you accelerate hard, the torque makes the engine twist as well as the pipes and can rub sounding like a banging rattle.
No, its an all stock 1998 with automatic. I've always had a rattle at low rpms..and still do..but this is new. It does sound like something is hitting something else.
I need to put it in the air and take a look..but dont have jacking pucks...
