Why does the plastic ring on the shifter/boot break?

Why does the plastic ring on the shifter/boot break?
Could it be that over the years of hot temps. that the plastic boot ring on the shifter boot is exposed to from the console area, the heat compromises the plastic, & it can then crack easily? Any other theorys?

I had to replace my entire assembly thanks to that.

I'd say you probably have the reason correct. It does get pretty warm on the console, and that plastic has to be affected by it.
