I had a set installed recently on my new wheels - got them from West Coast Corvettes. The nut is all that holds the tire pressure sensor up against the wheel, so I would think that yes, you have to break the bead in order to keep the sensor from falling down into the tire. Haven't tried it any other way though.
Interesting question, you'd think that 30 psi might be able to keep that sensor snug enough to change that nut out. I'm not going outside tonight and try it though.
Since the o-ring on the sensors is the air seal I'll bet you couldn't push the sensor away from the wheel with your hand against 30 psi. It would be like like trying to open an escape hatch against sea pressure at periscope depth...
I read somewhere that the nuts that come with the sensors should only be used. Something about the materials the nut and stem were made out of. I would check with a vette dealer or parts dealer about using something else. Just from something i remember reading.

Not totally true. The one's I got from Westcoast Corvette are stock OEM parts that were chrome plated. I ordered the chrome lug nuts, TPS nuts and valve stem caps.
It is an o-ring for the 1997-2000 sensors and a "rubber washer" for the 2001-2004 ones. I would think that you could change out the nuts by using needle nose pliers or vise-grips and cloths. It does state that other valve caps may affect the sensor's radio transmission, but I have used chrome metal valve caps without any problems.
