Default Radar detector location question...

Has anyone moved the rear view mirror down 3/8 of an inch and mounted their Escort 8500 directly above the mirror? I've seen quite a few where they are mounted to the left/right of the mirror, as well as, beneath it. I am going to hardwire mine, but I don't like the idea of it beneath the mirror and it appears that the radar "eye" on the back of my unit will be blocked by the right side of the mirror if I put it there. And the left side is too tight to my visor I think.

Another question I have is whether the tinting at the top of the window really affects the operation of a radar detector? Anyone who's noticed a difference on this please chime in.

Thoughts?

I often wonder why I am the only one.......
I have my radar detector between the seats right on the verticle wall... I dont care where the threat is... or the direction... when I hear it go off... I make sure im where I should be... I never have issue with it.. OH and here is the big deal... I have never has a speeding ticket in 45 years of driving... Ive never had a ticket period... Ive been stopped about ten times in 45 years, and usually just a license and registration check, but some just wanted to check out the ride... and always when I was in one of the Corvettes...

Bill, is it true you don't go out after dark, and never drive the Schuylkill Expressway?

Brady, I read somwhere that the tint reduces sensitivity a little - although I can't imagine why. I hang mine left side of mirror just below the tint hardwired to the mirror. Works great for me.

X50 mounted to the left and fust below the "cut-out" of the mirror.

I assume that the laser detection would be effected by the tinting at the top of the windshield.

If tint reduced sensitivity we could have painted all our jets with window tint, and we could have saved billions on the stealth programs.

I was out last night and it was dark, I even took the vette... I do not drive the Schuylkill Expressway.. the road sucks the big one... those people scare me TOO... isn't that pot hole city... ???? before I take my car anywhere I usually send out a point team to check out the terrain....once I get clearance.... Ill go anywhere...but the Schuylkill Expressway or the movies....

Mine is to the right of the mirror as high as possible. It works great, I took off the header panel and mounted a bracket to the aluminum header so I don't have the stupid suction cups on my glass. I then replaced the cover and ran the wiring down the passenger side to the acc hook ups under the kick panel. When it is in this position it can not be easily seen from inside or outside the car. It is partially hidden by the visor and cops usually go to the passenger side so they don't get hit by passing traffic. It is still visible to the driver.

I keep my x50 just to the right of the mirror, high and tight. It's out of the way, but can be difficult to see when the top is down and you can't hear it.

That's exactly where I mounted mine in my C3 and never had any problems. I’ve got it mounted under the passenger visor clip, using the Great Lakes Mount, in the C5 and it works well there too. Course both of mine are V1s…but I guess the result is the same

I've never tried one, but C5reations.com sells a mounting bracket. I noticed it when I was browsing through their website a couple days ago.

C5 Radar Mounting Bracket (RB500R) - $22

* Designed to mount detector below Rearview mirror
* Mounting rod is easy to install
* Rod mounts to base of mirror on one end
* Mounts to your detector bracket on the other end
* This is the same bracket that holds the suction cups
* Two styles available. Select based on model years

I left my mirror where it was and put the detector under it...
