I've had new belts to do this replacement, but everytime I look at engine (can hardly see the belts), I get discouraged.
How long did it take you to change the belts and is it hard?
Sorry I can't help you on the sound, but I would give it a chance with time, what have you got to lose?
Replaceing both belts at the same time took all of 15 mins start to finish, all you need is a quick diagram showing where the belts go round and a 15mm spanner to push the tensioner over to get slack.

It's a common item in auto stores for less than $5 US. I got mine at PepBoys. As for the U.K., I have no clue. I saw this stuff for the first time when I was growing up in Italy so I'm going to go out on a limb here and say you could probably get it through one of your local auto parts stores. If the salesman looks at you funny, tell him it's a spray liquid for conditioning belts.
