Just got back from the dealer where they replaced the fuel sensors due to the dreaded fuel gauge problem (they also had to replace a seal on the right tank and the entire left tank) I asked them to replace the column lock with the new shorter version. They didn't want to, saying GM told them it wasn't necessary on my '04, but they came around to my way of thinking after I held my breath and turned blue.
If you have the time could you explain to me why the shorter version on the column lock? I have a 2000 and I recently received a recall notice to bring the car in for something to do with the column lock...thankx.

Now no more chance of a lock-up! Horray!
Did they happen to mention why it wasn't necessary ? It isn't necessary if you have an A4 tranny, but is with a stick.
Later 2004's (BOD 10/3/03 for mine) came with a different bolt that was a bit shorter than others and did not cause the problem so GM told them I did not need the recall, but I insisted and they did it.
What they do is replace the bolt with a shorter one that will not lock the column even with the key out. I tried it and that is the case. The column lock bolt is necessary as it also functions to release the turn signal indicator when the steering wheel rotates back to center after a turn.
