Default Modifying Jack Stands

I was wondering if there's any reason to have jackstands with cradle tops anymore. I've been putting a flat piece of steel on top of the cradle ends, and lately, I've been wondering if I should just weld the flat pieces onto the cradles, instead of always having to balance them on there.

I mean, I don't think my Suburban or wife's Accura could even make use of cradles. Weren't they originally designed to fit under straight axles about 225 years ago? And, would I ever have a need for cradle tops?

Any comments?

Yeah, I jack the rear of my truck up by its axle, so I need a cradle top on the jackstand for it. If you don't do that on any of your vehicles, then weld away. But personally, I'd keep my options open though.

I use the cradle tops along frame rails when I lift the front of my C4 and two Olds dd's to change the oil. So there is still a use for them. However, stands are inexpensive enough that you could just buy another set if you need to.

I'm thinking about getting 2 more $.99 hockey pucks and running a piece of all-thread thru the middle, then drilling a slightly oversized hole in the top of the cradle on the jackstand to receive the all-thread and keep the puck in position.

That way you could just lift the puck off and still have the cradle when you need it.

buy another set, I know what you mean though about the cradles. I jack and support my car by the crossmembers

You have no idea. Cars can be replaced, but discs pressing on your spinal cord... SUCKS!
