Column Lock Removed - PIC
Kudos to RichieRichZ06 and the awesome team at Woodard Chevrolet in Davis!
Long story long. You guys know me by now!
Scheduled appt. 2:30pm on a Friday. Caught in traffic, called Rich, and he said they'd do it whenever I got there! WOW! On a Friday afternoon?
Got there around 3:00pm. BS'd with Rich and Mike for a bit. Finally let them get on the car. Must've been about 3:30 by then. Roger whipped it out pretty quickly. I didn't even have time to get bored waiting.
Rich hung with me, even helped answer other questions I had. Walked me around the shop. Had me speak to other mechanics to answer other questions.
OK, now wait... when has a dealership EVER let you meander in their shop? WOW, again!
OK, time's up. Column lock plate removed, CLB sitting on passenger seat.
Rich hands me my new coaster. Everyone should save these, because then we can say the plate really was useful, at least in keeping water rings off the furniture!
Here's the skinny on the fix, per Rich:
As you can see, the "coaster" has notches in various positions near the outer perimeter. The lock pin extends into any one of the notches, locking the steering. The locking plate was removed and was replaced with a plate that is smaller in diameter, thus, does not even have the outer section where the locking notches are. The new plate serves simply as a spacer to take up the play created by removal of the locking plate.
GM's version of a CLB of sorts is installed where you normally install a CLB. This GM harness contains a relay that bypasses the fuel shut-off.

Took my car in, had the fix done and am now getting the service steering column lock message and it then shuts off for a few seconds.
Is this problem going to get worse? While the column now no longer locks, do I need a new clb that the dealer should have installed or did they screw up the install? If I just go to my mechanic and ask him to install a clb is this the way to go?
The service manger says he has to call and get authorization to fix the now occuring problem, seems to me that this shouldn't even be a question as they must have screwed up the install?
Suggestions?
Call the factory for a service rep?
Call Detroit for help from customer assistance
Call Tony Soprano?
Thanks
Bill

If they put in the Harness K it may be a bad one. There were a few that had problems with them. But this is really a no brainer. It's their problem not yours. And I would be getting in touch with GM and complaining. Then call Tony!!
