I'm going to weigh in here based on my own experience with my car and my buddy's '01 as well. We both went quite lean after installing the Vararam. We did some extensive logging with EFILive (me) and HPT (him) and found we were dangerously lean after putting in the Vararam. We both tuned the cars using our WB systems and optimized the A/F. Incidentally, we also both installed SVO 30# injectors due to high injector duty cycles. This was a function of a series of mods including h/c, headers, etc.
Really, the best way to determine if you're in need of a tune is to scan with setup like EFI, HPT or one of the other scanning systems out there. A significant change to the intake setup can throw the A/F off to the point that the PCM may not be able to recover due to the high/low limitations in its adjustment range. Also, remember that dyno-tuning is WOT mode only and that idle and part throttle behaviors are optimized with scanning/tuning software and a WB setup. Check out the tuning forum here and the tuning software vendors sites for in-depth info.
