State Inspection Question...
Car is up for inspection next month and I was wondering if anyone had any trouble with aftermarket cat-backs and the inspection centers. I am in NJ and I added stingers last year. I don't want to go to the state inspection center and fail. I know there are some people who just take their car to a local gas station and they "pay" for a passing sticker. What is everybody else doing out there?
You might as well take the chance. It will be like rolling the dice down in AC, but you're already paying for the inspection through your registration fees, so you might as well go to the State Inspection. IMO most of the knowledgable people left NJDMV long ago, but that's another story
I use to be a Supervisor in charge of a state facility, but bailed out of there right before idiot Whitman destroyed the job by privatizing it. The fact is that most aftermarket exhaust systems are illegal in NJ because of their db levels (lol, your particular one is especially loud )
Anyway, the laws are backed by NJ Statute Title 39 and the Administrative Code, and if they do fail you (if they know their job, you should), there should be a copy of the law and correct db level allowed in the Supervisor's office of wherever you decide to go.
I just went through and failed for emissions in Secaucus NJ. I have a Blackwing, Kooks Headers, high flow cats and a Corsa Daytona exhaust. Not sure what caused it fail, but I'm looking at it.

I don't know about NJ either - but in Arizona - they just plug into the OBDII port and get their readings that way. My stock '98 (Corsas and Blackwing) passed without a problem. They never even bothered to look under the car to see if I had cats (I do...).

I'm pretty sure that's just what they in here in the corruption state. Plug in, get a reading, check it and that's it. If reading is in the correct range, you're good to go for another 2 years.
I live in Union County, NJ and took my 02 coupe to a local, recommended gas station for inspection. I'm not willing to risk having some inspection station gorilla (sorry) get his hands on my car and messing it up. It was well worth the cost to have the peace of mind.
Good luck.

If I take the car to a NJDMV inspection station and fail, can I take the car to a local gas station and "Pay" for a passing sticker or do I HAVE to return to the same NJDMV inspection station?

You can get your car inspected or re-inspected at any official authorized inspection station. That can be the DMV facility or a private garage.
