2.73 is standard with an A/T and the 3.15 is the optional performance upgrade. All manual's came with 3.42's
Bigger rear end means faster acceleration / seat of your pants take-off.
Smaller rear end means higher top speed and better gas mileage.

on the A4, with everything else considered constant, what is a reasonable guess for the 1/4 mile difference between 2.73s and 3.15s?

Let me add that the housings are different (2.73 vs the rest.)
So if you have a 2.73 and want to change I say go with 3.42.

Depends on the driver, really nothing big, IMHO

You can probably pick up about .15 (1 to 2 tenths). Driver is not so important with an automatic (in Drive) other than cutting a good light.

rear ends
The numbers are the ratios of the number of times the driveshaft turns for one revolution of the axle. So a 3:15 would spin the axle one time for every 3.15 turns of the driveshaft. A 4:10 would turn the axle one time for every 4.1 times the driveshaft turns. The higher numbers give you more power, less MPH.
