It seems somewhere along the line Sears changed their policy on torque wrenches, and did not "grandfather" the original warranty to people who owned them when there was the lifetime guarantee. I purchased my original torque wrench from Sears back in the late 60's, over the course of time, ratchet mechanism was replaced once, and another time the entire wrench. Now I'm getting the same 
from Sears. After a couple of rude sales persons, the manager told "this has been our policy for the last 10 years". I told him "that may be so, but that was NOT the policy when the wrench was purchased". My argument felt on deaf and unsympathetic ears. Hey Sears F U.

With Sears and K-Mart merging I think the quality situation will continue to move closer towards the floor. The Craftsman and Kenmore branding made the business, but now the accountants are squeezing the branding to get every last penny out of it. They will just drive consumers away.

At another "gearhead" site that I follow there was a discussion about the quality / reliability of the torque wrenches out there. The general concensus was that the Sears brand has gone down hill over the years - and that the best ones to get are the ones from the "trucks" that service the mechanics at garages - as well as the chain auto parts stores.
