My Z06 shifter is giving me trouble. I have driven a 5 speed since I have been 17. Even my GMC truck has a Hurst shifter which is much more precise, tighter and has shorter throws than my Z06 shifter. I know how to drive a real stick shift, so I can't blame the driver. I'm planning on getting a new shifter because the Z06 shifter feels like it should be in a sentra. The Z06 won't let me shift from 6th to 5th, ever. Double clutching doesn't help. I have to put it into 4th, then I can go into 5th. Anyone else have this problem? Does anyone know if the factory shifter linkage is adjustable, at least fairly easily? :U
Re: Can't downshift into 5th from 6th. (3.8TurboWhat?)
The shifter linkage is EASILY adjusted -- by putting a Ripper in place of the stock shifter, that is! ;)
Seriously, the stock shifter is simply crap compared to the Ripper (or Kirban). An aftermarket shifter will allow you to make any downshift you'd like, with ease -- and 2nd-to-3rd shifts are a walk in the park as well.
Also, with an aftermarket shifter, since you'll be shortening the throw and stick length considerably, no more elbowing your passenger to death with each rearward shift!
Re: Can't downshift into 5th from 6th. (z-u-later)
I had know problem w/ stock shifter though , check the linkage!
:chevy Good luck
Ditto.
I have not had any problem with my stock shifter in 7600 miles. My only problem is getting aggressive while downshifting from 5th to 4th...I almost let the clutch out on two shifts from 5th to 2nd at 70 mph  Luckily it didn't feel right and I moved it over to 4th in time.
Re: Can't downshift into 5th from 6th. (getinofficer)
Yeah, I've got the same problem...I don't think it has anything to do with the linkage...just the shifters tendancy to center in the gates. Always wants to pull it to the left towards 3rd. I may need to upgrade to this Ripper thing.
Re: Can't downshift into 5th from 6th. (3.8TurboWhat?)
Apparently the 2002 Z06 has a different plastic boot at the bottom of the shifter. See if you can get a replacement for the 2001. I'm assuming yours is a 2001 ?
Even in the Z06 the stock shifter is junk. I think we should all Email Dave Hill on this one. Get rid of the "rubbery rod" on all C5's. Just no excuse for this design oversight! :o
JWY -- There is an aftermarket shifter out there that is simply a cut-down stock shifter. Only problem is that the large base of the stock (and this) shifter makes it tough to screw down aftermarket ***** that sit low on the threads ('cause the leather boot doesn't want to spread over the large base easily). And, if you're looking for a more positive feel through shorter, tighter stops, then a cut-down stock shifter WON'T do it for you, since you're still left with the sloppy stops/feel of the stock shifter.
I went to order a Hurst, but found out they're not shipping, at least that's what I've been hearing. So I ordered the Ripper, should be here this week.
The problem has worsened such that it nevers goes into fith. If I put it into 5th it pops out of gear as soon as I let the clutch out a little. Somethin' isn't right... At least I don't need 5th to run the quarter mile... I'll have to pull the shifter out this week and see if something is amiss on the linkage. I don't trust anyone to work on my cars, and I hate dealerships. I'm not looking forward to this... Everything else on the car is so awesome, I'm not upset about having only a 5 speed.

Sorry to resurrect this thread 12 years later, but did you ever solve your issue, and if so, what was wrong?
Thanks.
I performed a fluid change and a shifter alignment on my car and it didn't solve the issue at all. When the car warms up then I can perform this downshift but it's not smooth and requires a blip of the throttle while 6th is still engaged to be able to go in.

I was just about to reply to checking shifter alignment, that is the least or at the bottom of the list, so uh wow...............lol
