i purchased a b&m short throw shifter but for the life of me i cant get my shift **** off. it's an aftermarket aluminum **** and i think it's just a screw on. could the metal have shrunk due to heat? is there some trick i dont know about? the thing is LOCKED on there. i dont want to use channel locks becuase i'm afraid of marring the surface from the pressure i'd need to lock onto it.
My buddy had the same problem, after alot of screwing a round he found that the aluminum **** did indeed have a top section that came off. After that it was justa matter of removing the little key and unscrewing it.
Check close to make sure your **** isnt really 2 pieces. If not one of those thing rubber things you use to open jars wrapped arounf the **** then the vice grips on top of that should work.
Threading aluminum onto steel can cause corrosion due to the dissimilar metals reacting. As a rule of thumb, always use anti-sieze compound when mixing the 2 metals. Same goes for engine bolts, sparkplugs, suspension bolts, etc.
If the shifter has been on a long time, this may be your problem, and if so, it might take a LOT of force to break it loose.
Before attacking it with the channellocks, get yourself a rubber strap wrench....these are made for removing/installing chrome and polished pipes on decorative plumbing fixtures. They are very inexpensive and look like this:
