What do you guys tell the body shop when having the piece over the exhaust on the rear bumper painted. I was thinking a gloss black would match the gloss of the paint but then I was told that would look fake and I agreed. So do I just tell the shop a flat black or is there a color code I should mention? My car is artic white.
Wow I didn't know that existed. However, my bill is going to be 200 total with painting and buffing out the rear and I'd rather not do all the work of installing that rear sticker and messing it up a little or having it peel off later.
I had mine painted glossy black over four years ago when it was not quite the interesting trend it is now. And, I decided to opt for the glossy black, instead of a "flat black", not only to match the clear coated finish that is already on the car, BUT, also for a longer wearing and protected finish that yields a deeper, and, more even color. IMHO: The "flat black" had to much of a faded appearance to me. Regardless, this paint scheme to the C5 azz, be it just around the exhaust accent panel, OR, having the whole rear end painted, is really very striking.

I agree with my friend Eden - I would paint the panel gloss black and clear just like they would have from the factory. It will look much more finished that way.
If you want some actual paint codes - this site might be of some use....
Can anyone else help me decide please. I just think the gloss black will make it look fake and the flat black will make it look like a rubber trim piece.
IDM,
I think that I would go with a satin black, it is between the gloss and flat, in that it has a shine but is not glossy
and if I'm not mistaken it is the color on the back of the C-5R Corvettes
Since you're looking for opinions I definitely wouldn't use gloss or flat black on Arctic White....it looks like chit. This white is too darn bright in sunlight and gloss black is too reflective for it. The flat black isn't reflective enough. Colors like Torch Red, Electron Blue, Spiral Gray, Mil Yellow are good candidates for gloss black though.
I had mine done in what the poster above mentioned in semi-gloss aka satin black. Don't really need a color code since you don't have to mach the black to anything so I wouldn't worry about that. Your paint guy will know what to do if he's any good. The satin looks pretty good with the white in sunlight.
Mine was painted a few years ago and still looks like it was done yesterday....even after being in the intense sunlight and heat down here.
I think it looks pretty good on the white because optically it narrows the height of the rear end but also makes the rear look wider. Does a good job of accentuating your exhaust system by separating it from the bright white. This white is a tough color to work with because it's so bright.
