Shifter problem..

So I've noticed a problem with my shifter thats been off and on for a few weeks. If I leave the shifter in neutral, and nudge it over to the right a little bit, I get major resistance and this weird sound. The best way I can describe this sound is like "rubber creaking" if that makes any sense at all. It definitely does not feel normal and I'm very worried, should I just change out the unit to a short shifter kit? I personally want to figure out the problem first, any ideas as to what could be causing this resistance? Thanks in advance.

You can try changing it and see if it improves. My concern would be as to what the problem is, the shifter or the tranny (shift forks, etc.)

If it is still the factory shifter, there is no adjustment on the shifter, so it is more likely something is going wrong inside the transmission.

damn....any idea as to what it could be? The factory warranty has run out on the car but it has had tranny work done before and my service advisor said I have a year from the date of that work to bring it in and they'll cover it. They previously replaced synchros and what not since it was getting stuck in gear..
