I think someone posted earlier a C4 Zr1 is hard to beat. With your budget. I don't think this is in the picture. If you did have that budget for a ZR-1 then I would take the Z06 over that. A much better value.. Getting back to the subject... Its really what you are happy with. I really considered a 1996 C4 with the LT-4 motor before I bought my 99 C5. At the time the Low mileage LT4s were going for around 18-19k. I found my 99 with 38000 miles for 21k, so I went for that, glad I did. I still find the 1996 Lt4s an attractive buy. Not a big selection out there, so you may have to look for awhile to get what you want if you are looking for an LT-4
I was just reading an old article on a CALLAWAY C4, looked plain, but it had a TT. The car only did 4.4 in the 0-60, 12.7 int he 1/4 mile. A couple of mods on a C5 and you are making the same numbers.
The C5 is such a better car that it would be hard for me to advise you to get a C4.
I agree, and I've owned two C4's already. They were cool, but they are NOTHING when compared to a C5. Totally different cars, they just happen to share the same name. You will NOT regret getting a C5!!
I passed up on a Grand Sport and a ZR1,to get my 2000 FRC! I LOVE this car! Believe me its night and day from a C4, drive both, then you'll know what I 'm saying!!!

I've had a '95 coupe and now a '04 Z06. Night and day. You've got to drive them and see which one you like better. The C4 is tighter sitting space, but more of a "hot rod". The C5 is more comfortable to get in and out and is more refined as a "sports car". Personal preference will decide which one you like better.
i say go with a C5, my 98 has about 90k miles now, and still runs like a champ..but I agree with the others that you should just buy what makes you happy, drive both and make your decision!
with all posts picking the C5. I have a 99 vert and had an 85 coupe back in '86. The c5 is way more a daily driver than the c4 and as stated, benefits from more modern technology.
I never forgot the line I heard from a former c4 owner as his reason for selling it;
him: "I couldn't fill the hole in the dash, so I sold it"
me: "what hole?"
him: " the hole you have to stuff hundred dollar bills down to keep it running!"
we owned a c4 previously; current ride is a c5. i may be a contrarian, but i'd opt for the lower mileage car whichever it is. miles are the kiss of death on any car. whichever you get, welcome to the corvette club; ain't nothing like it in the world. bub
