Fitted Luggage Project. Anyone Interested?
So the wife and I are planning another weekend outing and we will be packing in the few pieces of luggage that will fit with the top down. It occurred to me that high-end cars decades ago used to come with fitted luggage that used every inch of the available trunk space, were matched and, often, carried the logo of Dusenberg, Packard, etc. With the limited space available for luggage (particularly if you leave room for top down touring), maximazing the available space would be great.
Anyone ever heard of fitted luggage for vette verts?
See later posts. We're going to get a prototype set made up. Need some ideas from the forum.
Back in the custom coachwork days that would have been pretty upper-crust, but personally I'd feel like a bit of a goofball checking into a Hampton Inn with a full set of C5-logo'ed bags. I just don't think C5s are that exclusive.

I feel a bit of a goofball, and I don't even have any logo'd bags.

I suppose you are right. I'm probably a goof ball. But I'm not really interested in the logos. I merely mentioned that for reference.
The problem I'm trying to solve is space. If there were two or three bags that exactly fit the available space, you could pack them and know they'd fit and not waste the limited trunk room. My Harley Electra Glide Ultra came with exactly what I'm talking about. Three fitted bags that fit in the two side cases and the tour pack. Pack them in the house, put them in the bike, and carry them into the hotel that evening. The available space in the vette and the bike are not that different, BTW.
Given the other goof ball things that we all buy for our cars (look at any vette accessories catalog if you don't know what I'm talking about), this seems actually somewhat practical.
My goofball comment aside, I actually think the fitted aspect is a pretty neat idea. Maybe even a little cleat on two of the bags that fit into the targa top holders to prevent the bags from sliding forward. So maybe you have two main bags that fit side-by-side in the main area, and then two smaller bags that tuck into the space in the rear, behind the wheelwells and above the small compartment lids. But leave the logos off mine.
Ya know, I agree with this completely ! ! ! We bought an 04 Chrysler Crossfire and 1 week later a box arrived with a 3 piece set of custom Crossfire luggage. This was such a nice touch, I was very impressed. Why Chevrolet does not do this with thier "exotic" car I don't know, but if Chrysler can, so can Chevy ! ! ! I would love to have a custom set of luggage for my Vette....
On a serious note, I know former parachute rigger who could make it out of cordura in whatever color you like. He used to work for a major gear manufacturer and is striking out on his own. He's got all the machines and this would be just the ticket for him if people are interested.
I have an FRC so he'd need someone with a vert to stop by for the measuring. I could see three little bags that fit in the compartments and two or three larger bags in the main trunk.

Anyone in Florida with a vert willing to go by and let this guy take a look at their rear? Be interesting to see what he'd charge for some fitted bags.
He's up near Dade City. I should see him in the next couple days, if not I'll call him and ask him what he thinks and if he can give me an idea on a price.
How much difference between the vert trunk and mine?
