Default chirping noise

02 vert has been running fine, but all of a sudden I am getting this chirping sound coming from underneath the hood, upon further inspection it seems to be coming from the area of the serp belt.

oh no... not that noise!

not there!!!!

I think you'll most likely need a new car. If you're lucky, your insurance company will total yours out and you can get a new one.

sorry to hear about your misfortunues

I have the same sound it's the harmonic balancer. You can check this by starting your car take a flashlight and look at the bottom pulley if it wobbles thats the priblem It's not cheap to have fixed. Good luck I hope thats not the problem.

It's possibly the serpentine belt and/or tensioner.

Does it go away at all? I have some type of chirp, but it's only upon acceleration, sounding more like a whistle.

WTF!
A squeak/Chirp can be a lot of things like the balancer, belt tensioner, air pump or even the alternator and they aren’t cheap to fix. So let try to help this guy and not be a smart ***.

Your chirping problem is pretty easy to fix...but it is pretty difficult to figure what to "fix". There are only 2 belts, but several pulleys, idlers, and tensioners, and it is difficult to pinpoint the source of the chirping noise. Here is what is recommended around here for checking to see if one of the belts is the chirper. With the engine idling, spray water onto one belt, being careful not to spray onto a pulley or tensioner. If the chirp stops, the belt you got wet is probably the one chirping, replace it. If chirp does not stop, repeat process on the other belt. If the chirping continues after both belts are tested, it is probably a pulley or tensioner.

To narrow your search for the chirping culprit, with the engine idling, carefully detension the main serpentine belt. If the chirping stops, one of the s-belt pulleys/idlers/tensioners is bad, however you probably can't tell which. If the chirping doesn't stop with the s-belt detensioned, the chirper is probably on the A/C loop, but very difficult to pinpoint.

With the engine NOT running, check the pulleys, tensioners, and idlers for visible signs of wear, wobble, binding, etc. Idlers and tensioners are relatively inexpension and easy to replace and should probably be done in pairs, i.e. if you replace the idler on that belt, replace the tensioner too!

I get the same noise on my '01, but it usually after it's been sitting for a few days and not driven. I hear it for the first 15 - 30 minutes of driving then it 'usually' goes away. It seems to be coming from the tensioner pulley when I raise the hood to listen for it. If mine gets worse and / or doesn't ever stop I'll probably replace it and see if that's it.

Hey Ham,
He's a 22 year old kid. What do you expect? UCI must pay their students a pretty good salary in order for him to afford a vette.

It could just be the belt, a quick way to test that, is spray the belt with some wd40, if the noise goes away, replace the belt, if it doesn't try to determine which pulley it's coming from. If you're crank pulley is wobbling that doesn't necessarily mean your belt will chirp, my crank was wobbling very badly and my belts still didn't chirp. However a wobbling pulley is something that needs some attention pretty quickly.

Boy - did this thread go sideways fast.

Back on the track here - I had the same noise, and as one reply has already said it can be difficult to determine the problem.

In my case we first replaced the harmonic damper - which appeared to be wobbling and bumping into the side of the serpenetine belt. That didn't solve it. Then we cleaned the belts - thinking some oil had gotten on them and was causing a chirp.

Then we replaced the AC belt.

It was the tensioner.

This was such an annoying sound - sounded like a million crickets under the hood of my cool car.

Good luck

I don't know about spraying lubricant on a belt that shouldn't slip. When my belt starts chirping I spray STP Belt Dressing on it.
