This is a perfectly legit question. I remember my grandfather had these installed on his cars for when he pulled them behind his motorhome. He would install a toggle switch under the dash, The Idea was to keep from racking up false miles. So, 01ZO6, you just bought a motorhome to pull that Z with or what?
I bet not many know this and I would never advocate doing it to deceive anyone, thats Illegal. But the C5 instrument cluster has its own memory for mileage as well as the mileage being stored in the BSM as well. It is theoretically possible to switch out the instrument cluster assembly with a used one. The used cluster will display what ever miles the car it came out of had on it. I know this because I added a 300 Mph/Kph Speedo in mine. I first switched just the Speedo head alone but the domestic cluster was not calibrated for it so it did not display the right speed, so I swapped the domestic oil & temp gauges into the export cluster and put it in my car, works perfectly now but it showed (4800 miles when set on English), my car has more miles on it than that. I had to go to the dealership service dept. to have the mileage pulled from the cars BCM and programmed into the replacement cluster in order to display my correct mileage.
This maybe something to watch out for when buying a used C5, just because it shows X amount of miles The BCM may say different.
I do not advocate doing anything illegal here, but the man deserves his question answered. To accomplish this you need: needle nose pliers or tweezers. You must disconnect pin# ** on the *** . I believe its the *** or **** wire. Your speedometer/tachometer may not work while the pin is disconnected. :blueangel:

It's much easier to just get a used cluster to run the miles up on while your original one with your odometer is put up in a closet somewhere
And what's the name of Your Used Car Dealership?? :D
I'm just an individual. I just put that out as warning to everyone that it is that easy to show lower mileage on a C5, I found this out purely by accident when I added an export cluster to mine (300 Mph/Kph) I took it to the dealer and had the mileage from my BCM programed into my new cluster so my mileage is accurate. That's what your supposed to do. How many used C5's out there with altered/inaccurate miles??? :blueangel:
It is quite difficult to tell what cars have and have not been tampered with. I'm guessing that this practice is probably widespread. I think it is quite awful and deplorable. Thats why I won't give full details on the procedure. You could just switch out the cluster, but I think Its much easier and cheaper to pull a pin or two. BTW I only ran into this info b/c my old car was a victim of such tampering.

I think it would be a good idea for anyone making the investment for a used C5 to take it to a dealership and have the mileage checked thru the BCM
to make sure it's accurate, since it's so easy to show altered mileage.
