went out for a run today and when i stopped car and put on emergency brake it sounded like something snapped!, i released brake and reaplied brake and brake seemed to still be working. hope i didn't cause any damage.

That's happened to me a couple of times. I think that sound is the cable adjusting itself.

Mine used to do the same thing. Took it in to the dealer to have it checked and they ended up replacing the entire parking brake mechanism at the console area. Said something like the gears in there were screwed up. Since then it has worked fine. May not be the same problem, but I had the loud pop.

Seriously, though, thanks for the heads up, JD. Maybe we should start thinking of taking the console section off and at LEAST looking, before something breaks that we could've prevented.
OK, I vote that the person who started this thread be the first one to look and tell the rest of us what they found, so that we all don't have to do the work.

Happened to mine as well. Dirt gets in the gears/grease and needs to be cleaned out. Or, you could take it to the dealer. I'm sure they would be more then happy to replace it for you... just get your check book ready.
