I purchased a '99 Vette which has the in-dash radar detector with the sensor mounted in the bumper opening.
Is there a way to disable the radar detector when traveling thru states that have outlawed them? I'd hate to be fined or have my Vette confiscated.....
I am not aware of this being a factory option.,... but a previoius owner aftermarket installation.
It has to be direct wired. I would folllow the power line and install an on/off switch in the power line.
These is a possibility it was direct wired to a spare fuse. If that is the case you could pull the fuse. But if it was wired into the harness, pulling the fuse might disable a number of items.
I don't know about disabling the radar detector, but I can tell you only Virginia and Washington, D.C. have no radar laws in the U.S.A. Also many Canadian provinces are against their use. If you stay away from those places it's not an issue.
I live in Georgia & picked the car up in Philadelphia. Had to drive thru Virginia on the way home. I pulled into a fast food place in Virginia on the way home & two patrolmen had someone stopped in the parking lot. My detector started going off like crazy. I had my windows up, praying they wouldn't hear it. Luckily they didn't & I made it home ok.
I think there's only 3 states that have outlawed detectors. And they are on the east coast. Not sure which ones though.
Actually it is down to just Virginia and Washington D.C. according to the Beltronics FAQ file. As others have indicated this detector you have is not a factory option. It is an aftermarket install. I'm not sure how you could disable it unless you can find it's power source and perhaps wire a switch in line that you can access from the cabin.

I would be very surprised if there is not an on off switch somwhere. What does the display look like? If it only has 2 LEDs on tha dash it is probably made by K40 and should have a remote
Yep,I travel every day through Virginia into Washington,D.C. and they are annal retentive when it comes to Radar Detectors....they even make me take it off the dash or window when they see it,even though it's not on, and to make things worse..... the military installations can't wait to tell you the same thing. Like Radar detectors make us drive crazy,ha..[/QUOTE]

Yep got pulled over in Va. They have radar dector dectors. He told be to turn it off and since mine was also hard wired to dismount it. I had just gone from Md into Va about 1 mile when I got pulled. I usually turned it off because there are so mant troopers in Va its not worth taking the chance speeding anyway. I got rid of that one and bought a Beltronic which is susposed to be stealth and not detetable but I don't know since I also rememberd to turn it off in Va.

I live in NOVA. The troopers do not bother me in my C5. I run VG2 in both my C5 vert and my Solara vert with no problems. I did however get nailed in Emporia, VA in my old SRT by laser. When this happens, quickly remove the detector and place under seat. The detector did tell me the instant I was hit, and since I was the only car on 95 at time I know to take it down and wait the local cop to catch up.
Be very careful if you try to hide it under the seat. If the officer notices he may think you are reaching to GET something (weapon). Could get sticky!
