I'm in the process of changing the spark plugs and ignition wires on my '03 Z06. I picked up a set of MSD 8.5 mm wires. Taking out the old wires, I see they have metal shields on them. And the wires seem to run very close to the exhaust manifolds. The MSD's have long wire guards on them, but I'm wondering if I should put on the old shields or some of those high-tech wire covers to insulate.

when i put new plug wires on, i kept the old metal shields on. Figured it couldnt hurt especially since im running headers. Some guys run without the covers all the time and put them back on when showing off the car at a show or gathering. You can also get those koolsox or whatever they are called. They are only $40 and are cheap protection when compared to buying a new set of plug wires.

Thanks.
I keep the beauty covers on the LS6 and LS7. Experimented on the LS6 by removing them and measuring h2o temps at the line. Never found an advantage to pulling them.
But many racers pull them off at the track under the theory that they trap heat. They may have some info I missed.
I run HPDE's where the car gets very hot... I take them off. I assume they allow heat to be disapated more quickly in the pits when I have the hood up and the car is cooling. Also, it's easier to inspect the car over and check for anything amiss.
