Easy, the people in a Mustang who are on a cell phone...while racing a C5...telling the person they are talking to that they are winning. These people introduce an added dimension of danger...they are illusional!

I don't see a difference between the two. Both can get people annoyed, highly pizzed, or worse... dead.

Because .08 is considered Drunk in most states I'd say the cell phone is worse. Driving on the cell phone should result in a 6 month suspension, fine, and insurance surcharges too

Wonder if they go through any specialized training to do all that?

You don't just see random 'intersection' crashes involving police cars every day......

if every car was also a police car you probably would

It's not just cell phones, although cell phone use is VERY prevalent. I've seen everything around here instead of people driving. Shaving, applying makeup, reading (maps, a newspaper, books), eating (not just McDs, cold cereal out of a bowl w milk and a spoon, no hands on the wheel), weight lifting (yup, what looked like 20 lbs of free weights doing curls), working on a computer, the list goes on. Yet we wonder why we can't get the speedlimits raised to a reasonable level.

yeah they are fc ing wa kers.

i had some clown not only PULL OUT into two lanes of traffic, but then diagonally stop, and wait for the oncoming two lanes ...to scoot across the road in dog-leg fashion from a carpark to a side street- nearly clipped me...

I had to follow him due to braking suddenly to avoid him, and turn down the same street, and it was then, i could see what happened: he had his detachable p nis on his ear and wasnt paying attention.. so i stayed with him till the next lights and called out to him 'what the hell!? -- > he's like "I was crossing the road, f ck off' and im like roaring at him

:"IF YOUR GONNA CALL , PULL OVER, you damn well gave me a heartattack let alone the accident you just narrowly avoided"

<< he was oblivious>>

2nd istance was on a freeway with a moron pulling hard right into the right most lane to manage the exit, only I was in the way! -forced me to brake and swerve off the shoulder and up the exit as well --
--YET AGAIN CELL FONE **** R....

your absolutley right, this kind of cr p is far more dangerous and ludicrous than those rare plonks that 'talk about streetracing'

i dont much care to wage the 'which sin is worse argument' but certainly of all the tw ts that complain about dr@g racing talk - if even half of them, asked themselves "DO I cause unsafe road conditions by talking while driving on a cell fone: and remove their 'anti-dr@g' comments by form of self-regulation"... Its my firm believe Corvette Forums Bandwidth costs would go down by half

the awswer sounds a bit 'street vendor-ish' but Police should fine drivers $500 OR buy a headset from them, on the spot at $100

(with profits to the local accident-victims trust)

I'm not sure if y'all know this or not, but real estate agents existed prior to cell phones, and they were actually able to conduct business in those dark ages.

I guess I just don't get, like a previous poster said, how any call can be that important.

I've heard this argument before, but it doesn't make sense. People have been having conversations in their cars for as long as there have been cars. Why is it that a cell phone conversation (even a hands-free one) is any more dangerous than having a conversation with your passenger?

What I don't get is why jurisdictions don't just lump cell phone use, eating, drinking, applying make-up, yelling at the kids, and whatever other distraction you want to think up, into the "driving with undue care and attention" category and start ticketing the people who really cause the collisions (I refuse to call them "accidents"). Oh yeah, because it's easier to stand by the side of the road and enforce speed limits, 'cause we all know that "speed kills." Never mind the fact that when some a$$hole changes lanes without signaling I have no warning that I need to take evasive action.

Just went to bluetooth and it's the best thing I've ever done. Hit the button on the ear piece and hands free from there

I agree that the cell phone user is a big problem. I've heard rumors that a cell phone user is more prone to accidents than a drunk driver. Not sure if its true, but sure seems like it.

Saw a recent mythbusters episode where they ran a driving course while talking on a cell phone. They were graded both on the phone and off the phone by an instructor. They did well when off the phone, but failed miserably when on the phone.

Not sure how well hands free will help, to me it seems the problem is concentrating on the phone call.
Actually on that same episode of Myth Busters they did compare the cell phone use to being legally intoxicated. (They had the same two drivers imbibe until they were legally drunk.) It turns out that they did better when legally drunk than when using a cell phone. They failed the test in both cases, but performed better when legally drunk. They actually had them answer questions while using the cell phones to ensure they were distracted while using them.

I wonder how long it will take the NHTSA to notice that one...

One of my best friends bought a forrest green Mustang GT brand new back in 1992. It looked incredible..for a mustang. He didn't have it more than three months or so when some asswipe on a cell phone rear ended him at a stop light. It never looked the same again. I don't condone street racing even though I have participated in it, but DAYUM, people should have to pull off the road to use their cell phone. James

Default Idiots on Cell Phones!!!!

Idiots on cell phones **** me off. I think we're all guilty of picking up the phone now and then, BUT there's the ones who you pass every morning and they're on the phone every morning. Some ja*k*** almost took the whole rear end off my C5 two weeks ago talking on the phone...I went to turn into the office parking lot and he comes hauling @** behind me not paying attention, I start turning and my co-worker coming the other direction said all the sudden he darts out, barely misses me as he makes nasty faces and yelling AT ME and almost hits her yet. Had he been paying attention instead of yapping on that stupid phone, he would have safely slowed down and never came close to me or my co-worker.

Oh OH i can answer this one!!! I watched a british TV show on this very subject. The difference between having a conversation with a passenger and having a cell phone conversation (hands free) is still a big difference.

The reason being, when things get complicated (lane changes, evasive maneuvers, other idiots driving etc...) the passenger in the car Shuts UP (so do you) and lets you drive. Then when things calm down they'll resume talking. However when you're on a cell phone the person on the phone keeps talking and you keep listening... Thats what they said makes the biggest difference.

They also said, that in fact Passengers that DONT shut up or drivers that converse with passengers regardless of driving situations are JUST as dangerous as any cellphone... if not more so, because some IDIOTS make frequent EYE CONTACT with their passengers!!!

I thought I was the only one who sucked at multi-tasking. Whenever I'm engaged in conversation with a friend and things get hairy or busy, I have to stop talking to concentrate on what I'm doing at the wheel. Glad I'm not alone. James

So basically it comes down to situational awareness on the part of the person with whom the driver is conversing. That makes sense. I know that, for example, when I'm trying to merge onto a busy freeway my wife will stop talking and wait until I've completed the merge.

And yes, I have seen a huge number of people who feel they must look at their passenger whenever they speak to them. I just don't get it.
