Ditto setup as with mqqn. I think it sounds great inside the car and I don't think it's bad on my Z (with a partition), but on a coupe I found it a bit annoying on a trip of any length. It is definitely louder outside; if your local constabulary is of a mind, you'd definitely be eligible for a ticket.
(And Andy, it seems like Peoria might start cracking down on this....)
here's what i'm planning...
cut axle over at the muffler inlet, weld ss flowmaster hushpower (12") resonator, then s bend 2.5" 304 stainless tube similar to stingers and build custom 4" tips. just curious on how loud it would be with just those resonators instead of a muffler. i might just buy the stinger mufflers separate and do the same. i really like the deep growl. i did similar on my c-4 i customized it with delta 40's and a dynomax y with a cross tube, i got more compliments on that sound, it was much nicer than the s bolt on 50's series.
Merely as food for thought:Your idea is akin to the B&B Bullet overaxle exhaust system for the C5. The B&B Bullets are not made with the traditional o.e. style canister mufflers, nor, are they even made with traditional mufflers. The B&B Bullets simply have a small "resonator" (left and right side) molded into the over-axle tubing section, and, then "V's" left and right, into the area where the o.e. canisters used to reside. The B&B Bullets are LOUD. And, IMHO, are one of the best over-axle C5 exhaust systems for aggressive sound and simplicity of design that I have ever tried. Good luck with your project. Sounds like you are really into custom modifying your C5 for improved exhaust performance. Now, that is a plus. Enjoy!

Hi rtagz -
I posted a link to a cat only, resonator tip exhaust system very similar to what you are discussing (post # 2...)
That was ~150.00 depending on who does the welding for you....
that actually sounds nice. i can get the borla stinger mufflers only for $135ea. and polished 304 stainless 2.5" straight pipes 10' section 14 guage for $65. my buddy works at a muffler shop so that is taken care of. i don't know if i want the borlas though, i want something different. i have a design drawn up for tips reminiscent of the WWII Browning M2.
I'm very interested in this, but couldn't find much information on it. Does anybody have any links to a write up on this forum for this? Or perhaps links to sites where i can order the materials for this?
Would it be insane to just have straight pipes with NO resonators or mufflers? Just pipes from the cats to the tips. ( I mean is it to loud or illegal?)
What diameter pipe should i use, what are the stock pipe diameters on the stock axelback system?
i got some great prices from 21st century exhaust in Boynton Beach, FL. I originally used them when Flowmaster rep referred me for my '88. about 5 yrs ago i bought 2 flowmaster 40, 1 pair dual ss tips w/rolled edge and dynomax y pipe for $325 shipped. They quoted me $135ea (plus ship) for the Borla Stinger muffler and $65 for 2 5 foot sections of polished 304 ss 14 guage. the one drawback is that I will probably have to buy the mandrel u- bends separate. it is very difficult to u-bend polished ss. i found the u bends for about $45 bucks ea. polished and as low as $26 unpolished. i'll dig up the websites, i think stainless works was one, and i'll post them.
Then put pipe and tip in place and measure how much of the straigh pipe to cut off.
Cut the straight pipe to length and weld it to the over axel portion of the factory exhaust.
Then install the system, and mark the pipe where i need to mount a tab. Then remove system, weld tab, and connect tab to the car for support, as shown in this pic. (Someone elses fabricated exhaust)

Hopefully, i'll have a setup similar to the one above. I'd like to coat it so it doesn't rust, and i'd like to take more pictures of the install and whatnot then post them. I'll keep you up to date...

Please let me know if my pipe diameter is wrong... and what the factory pipe diameter is... thanks.
I just took my tips to the local muffler shop and let the man work - he cut off the mufflers, then just bent up a couple of pieces of pipe on the mandrel bender, and welded it in place on the car - then he welded on the brackets (on the car still) and then the tips - making sure it all lined up good.
I supplied the tips and the jacking pucks and the $.
They charged me 60 or 70 bucks for the whole shebang - and the tips were around $40 from Summit Racing (Hedmann), nad I tipped the guy a $20 for being careful and aligning things up good.
I have not done it yet, but I will remove them and paint them with high temp paint to keep them from rusting.
If your interested in a "non off the shelf" cat back system. Random Tech the high flow cat people make a full three inch system with dual pipes. this system is used by many road track folks. The sound is the most like the C5R of any system I have every heard. Just another option
to consider.

hey you might try the same thing, only use aeroturbines, in place of the flowmasters. hushpowers have a lot of restrictions. the aeros would be loud i think. you might go to there web site and check it out. aeroturbines.com. they claim big numbers? i don't think so. but if they got 15hp for 200 bucks. that would be a good deal! flowmasters would almost cost as much. and i think they might not fit, they are long! if you can't get a good price PM me!
i was looking at those also but i'm not very familiar with them, the fows i was looking at were the 12" hushpowers, but they are just resonators and i think they may be too obnoxious. the regular hushpowers are 18" they may be too long.
