Strangly enough I just went to remove my car from storage and my info display was reading service colume lock. The car would not start cause the battery was dead but after reading this I guess im better off to just call a tow truck and have the car taken to a dealership. That then means that the steering wheel wont turn? Help me out here people
I would not want my car towed unless absolutely necessary. If I were you I would either charge the battery or get a new one. A low battery will cause several messages to appear on the DIC and they will clear once the battery is charged.
I called my GM dealer when I found out about this column lock deal. (Thanks, Roscoe). I asked about a recall and the service manager told me that my Vette (manual 6) was "fixed" per recall in 2004. Why wouldn't they have had this "new" recall that came out in February? Now I'm a little concerned about the service department. If I can't trust them, I think I'm in trouble. I just had the car in last month for a complete inspection to purchase GMPP major guard. Looks like they would have been clued in.
They are either too lazy or just not up to date on the recalls. The new recall specifically supercedes the old one and will disable your locking plate unlike the one in 2004. You should have been mailed a notice in the mail regarding the new one. If you had the earlier recall done, then the notice would have told you only to bring it in if it breaks. Those of us that have ignored all the recall notices got one saying it is a "Safety Recall" and to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. I am just sticking with my Column Lock Bypass kit (CLB).

I just bought the car in December, so I wasn't the one who had it in in 04 for the fix. Shoot...I'm headed out on the road tomorrow and now I'm afraid I will get stuck somewhere. I guess if I don't get stuck, I will drive past the dealer and be persistant. Thanks!

Install a new battery and order and install a CLB. Just follow the installation instructions that come with the CLB kit, it's really not very difficult at all. The hardest part is re-attaching the lower dash panel. You can buy a CLB for around $50 at Corvettes of Houston or Thunder Racing. Many other Forum vendors carry them as well.
Here is a link to instructions for installing a CLB:
Yup, look at that...appears as if the new recall will prevent the steering column from locking up even in manual transmission cars. Woohoo! It's about time.
...but some notices (mine included) state that they won't fix it unless it has already failed.
I had not bought the CLB out of laziness. Then I got the recall notice. It said the recall was good until 2007,or 08, I think. And to bring in the car if the column locked. So I waited. Luckily, it locked on me in my driveway. The dealer will remove the locking plate so this should never happen again.
Now, I need to buy me a tire repair kit and an air pump. I have been taking many chances driving to Houston, San Antonio and the hill country running the risk of a flat tire.

Because they are not always fixing the problem. I've read of some problems with the harness they are having.
For $50 I can't believe some guys don't do this themselves. I could care less if GM will fix it for free. I did my install in 30 minutes.
