Mine is a daily driver, so it sees rain and road grunge all the time. I hand-wash and detail it every chance I get. However, there have been special circumstances that I take it through a touchless car wash. If it's been a particularly rainy and yucky for a day or two (or ten), I will run it through the touchless carwash to knock off all the really bad grime. I'll pick the cheapest wash (water, soap, period), so as not to get their lousy wax and whatever other chemicals they would spray on it for $4 extra. Then, I go home, and hand wash the whole car - sparing my cleaning mit all the nasty stuff that it would have had to have battled had I not gone through the touchless 10 minutes earlier.
Also, I've been known to run it through a touchless because, following a period of rain, the nice weather has returned and I haven't had a chance to wash it but I don't want to be embarrased by driving around in a car that looks like I just got off the roads of Hazzard County.
Either way, on the rare occassions that I do run it through a touchless car wash, I keep in mind that the soap they are using is probably removing any wax products I've applied previously and I'm just asking to re-wax the whole car. It's a trade-off I'm willing to make to have a "quick clean" in those cases that I need it. It just gives me an excuse to spend a few hours of "alone time" with my car in the driveway on the weekend.

I've got a tip for washing when away from home. Buy the Mr. Clean car wash kit and all you need to find is a hose to borrow. No need to dry so it makes cleaning easy.

Have to admit that i have taken my vette to a by hand car wash. Last two times i was not that happy with their work. So today i washed the vette myself. Definitely time consuming but i do a much better job. So i guess i will be doing it myself from now on.

This is sorta a funny / stupid moment story.... the first day my vette arrived off the transport truck from Florida it was filthy. Since it was too cold outside for me to wash my new toy, I took it to the hydro-jet automatic car wash. I figured since only water touches the car, it would be ok. Only problem is my vette is a vert. About 2 minutes into the wash, water started spurting through the window tops. Needless to say it made a big mess inside my precious new toy. That's the last time my baby has seen any kind of wash that didnt involve me, a hose, and a bucket of suds.
