Default Airbox Mod

Hello guys and gals. I was replacing my air filter today and was just amazed by the small opening in the air box lid. I know the Z-06 air boxes have a much larger opening for better flow and I have seen threads about modifying the box and creating a bigger opening. I am about to cut that thing for better breathing. My question is if the new opening will make me throw some codes because of the change in flow? Anyone out there open their air box and what happened when you did? Any help or insight would be appreciated. Thanks

Funny. I was just about to post a giveaway for my Z06 airbox (bottom) with the zip tie mod already done (see pics). If you want it, it is yours. (just let me know asap if you do NOT and I will offer it elsewhere... I will give you 'til 9pm since others have asked)...

-Curry

BTW: you can do this exact same thing to yours as well....

Hey RJ, I did the "Swiss Cheese" mod all the way around the lower half of a Z06 lid and had a Borla X-Pipe installed. No codes what so ever. The best thing is I got SOTP performance increase out of it.

I neatly "swiss cheesed" the upper part of the cover with a 1" drill. I stayed away from the bottom for fear of inhaling water.

I have a front hood seal so water can't get in that way.

If you make a large hole make sure you do the hood seal or water may be a problem

Thanks for the input guys. I am going to start some cutting on that box tomorrow if codes are not going to be a problem. I will keep the opening on the top half of the box and my plan is to get the hood seal done as well.

I don't think you will throw any codes. You may have to drive it a bit and let the computer relearn the air flow.

You should throw no codes so cut away at the airbox. Do some careful study first to make sure your cuts are not mistakes; and if you are going to cut the box there is no need for the Z06 box lid, cut the stock lid. While you have things appart you may also want to consider a high flow after market air filter like K&N, they are good for about 1 rwhp based on past dyno' and airbox mods on my car.

One other point, mods to the airbox change the air/fuel ratio mixture. If you live near a reputable tunner it would be a bonus to have them dial it in for you.
