Your friend doesn't know much about batteries..On every car I ever owned, the batter would read around 14volts.

14.4 and 13.8 are the most common 'target' voltages for new car batteries. Almost everything digital runs off of 5 volts and will have it's own regulator.

Fuses are in place to limit overloads... Thats right, they have a purpose.

Also take note that in cases where your car has not been run for a long time upon initial startup and for a short time thereafter your battery will read a much higher voltage as the alternator charges it up. As the battery begins to store the charge the meter will slowly drop to its normal reading.

Fuses are current overload protection devices...Not voltage.

14.4 is perfect for the C-5. I am not sure of any car that would have such a low voltage under normal conditions. Usually 14 is the min......

Me thinks the question vs the posts in this matter differ

IF you are asking the question of voltage shown on the gauge on the dash, I do believe this does not represent the battery voltage per se.

I believe this is the voltage from the alternator.

Either way, you friend needs to find a new hobby

I think it's the voltage from the alternator which is limited by the voltage regulator.

I had a 70's boat motor (merc) that had an overcharge problem, probably from the magnets slipping in the magneto. I'd never seen any vehicle peg it's voltage meter into the red before. It fried the brainbox and some other electronics before I noticed it. Fuses didn't help.

Seriously, it's fine, it's the resistance of the battery times the current going through it to recharge the battery and as the current drops, the voltage will come down.

It's normal

12.6 is considered a fully charged battery. 13.5 -14 is the alternator charging the battery or should be. Check your battery voltage once the engine is off. Check it again later in the day or the next morning. It should still read 12.6; if not it isn't holding a charge. To test the alternator, check the voltage on the battery. After you start the engine, the voltage at the battery should increase to 13.5 volts or so....comprende? Heime
