Default Mods & CA emissions?

I am awaiting the arrival of my 03 M.Y. Z and was wondering about emissons. Is this an issue? As my car is coming from out of state I am required to smog it as soon as it arrives to register it in CA. Are there any mods like cam, superchargers, etc. that are emissions legal or that will pass emissions here in CA? If I do a cam/head upgrade, will I run into issues later smogging it or is this not a big deal? Just curious. Sorry if the question is dumb, but just curious if this has been an issue for anyone in CA.

thanks in advance for your input.

My car came from NY via NH with a Blackwing thrown in along the way for good measure. It will pass just fine as long as it isnt the normaly aspirated and filtered Vette from the factory. Quote from the smog guy " These cars fail cause they breathe like crap straight from the factory. Guys like you get em and give em a little air, and the PPM goes way the F**k down" Think cold air intake

Technically speaking ANY visable mod is illegal in California unless CARB approved. Be sure to have any paperwork available at inspection to avoid problems. Internal mods may actually lesson the smog output though. Long tube headers are not approved but shorties may be (CARB) approved. Your testor is facing a $10,000.00 fine if he lets an obvious illegal part pass inspection. In the bi-annual smog testing counties you are kind of stuck. But in some parts of California only one test is required at sale, so you can mod, mod, mod after that until you sell the car.

you will need the smog initially, but after that, you wont need a smog until 2009.

Newer cars from CA are exempt for 6 years now..or is it 5.

read up.

1. Find a smog ref.

2. Befriend him.

3. Mod the hell out of your car with no worries.

Got any more info on this? Because I just had to smog a 2000 Suburban which was a 2000. According to what you said, I should've been exempt. FWIW, I don't see anything on the link you posted that indicated anything about what you said.

Thanks.

let me look it up again...the Owner at Syngery (Rick) told me this...and I checked it out as well and it was true...brb

Well if you bought a 2006 model in 2005, you wouldnt need to smog until 2009

Not all vehicles must get a Smog Check. Additionally, some vehicles only need a Smog Check when they are being sold or being registered in California after previously being registered in another state. Whether or not a vehicle needs a Smog Check depends on the type of vehicle, the model-year, and the area in which the vehicle is registered.

Some vehicles are exempt from the Smog Check program

Legislation enacted during 2004 made several changes in motor vehicle Smog Check exemptions that will become effective next year. Following is a summary of the revised exemptions and the effective date of each change:

Beginning January 1, 2005, vehicles 6 or less model-years old are exempt from the biennial Smog Check inspection requirement. For vehicles with registration renewals due in the 2006 calendar year, this exemption includes model-years 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006.

Beginning January 1, 2005, vehicles 4 or less model-years old are exempt from the Smog Check inspection requirement upon change of ownership and transfer of title transactions with DMV. In 2006, this exemption includes model-years 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006.

Beginning April 1, 2005, the 30-year rolling exemption has been repealed. Instead, vehicles 1975 model-year and older will be exempt. Therefore, 1976 model-year and newer vehicles will continue to be subject to biennial inspection indefinitely.

Beginning April 1, 2005, vehicles being initially registered in California that were previously registered in another state are exempt if the vehicle is a 1975 and older model-year vehicle. Newer vehicles, the first 6 model years, are not exempted upon initial registration in California. These vehicles are required to undergo a Smog Check Inspection.

Awesome. Thanks for all of the input. Is it true what y2kcorvettebob said about the Z06 not passing smog in stock form? That seems odd to me that it wouldn't pass at factory settings.
