Default Homemade suede insert project

Well for some reason, I go it into my head that I could make my own custom interior. So, I bought some yellow suede online and decided to start my project. I decided to start with something small. I chose to make a new middle insert for the driver's side seat as it was in need of repair.

Let me tell you, this seatcover fabrication is no joke. On top of this, I have never used a sewing machine in my life. I removed the old insert off the seat and traded all the securing latches from the old seat cover onto the new suede insert. I was actually going to replace the entire insert with yellow suede, but my father gave me the bright idea to use the top section of the cover that had "Corvette" embroidered on it and attach it to the suede insert. I was doing well until I get to attaching the "Corvette" piece to the top of the new insert. But thanks to dear old dad and his aparently natural talent for sewing we were able to finish the insert. Actually, it turned to a family project as we needed more expertise on sewing.

Well anyway here are the results:

It's probably not professional grade, but it "looks" better than the original seat. I still need to repair the side bolster, I just haven't decided what leather to use yet.

Here is a shot from outside the car:

The color is not a perfect match, but I think it blends well with the Mil. Yellow. Next up will be the other seat and a few other interior panels to liven up the interior. What do you guys think?

It's definately a one of a kind interior. With a little more practice you could be on your way to a new career. I think your middle insert needs something though, maybe some decorative stitching or something, it just seems too plain. Keep up the good work.

There are a lot of projects that I would attempt on my own, but none that involved a sewing machine.

Good work for your first try, but it looks out of place unless you do the rest of the interior to match.

All in all, I really admire the guts and effort!

I agree that it looks a bit plain. some black stitching on the suede would make it stand out yet blend it at the same time..and eextend it to the butt area too..great effort and some skills!

One thing i really like about my Dads 300C SRT8 is the suede seats, they really hold your butt in the seat......

Good start I think, you may have the push-clips a bit too tight causing the "sunken" spots on the inserts just below the black/yellow switch.

Agree that you need to break up the panel a bit.

Maybe try something like this:

Love the color and idea IMHO I think you need to put some stitching in to give some texture.

Thanks guys. Once again this was my first effort so I know that there is tons of room for improvement. But I have to admit, it turned out better than I thought it would.

I agree DCHopkins/Joe0121, that it would look better with the original style seams in black stitching going down the insert. But at this time, the kind of skill it would take to do that is out of my reach. It is my first go around so I will try more things after I finish my first attempt.

Cozmo/chargedsol, I am definitely going to do more of the interior with the suede. I was already considering doing an insert on the bottom seat cover, but the curves of the seams are a little intimidating as I had a hard enough time making straight seams.

I like that idea of putting another strip of suede above the "Corvette" embroidered black strip NAVY08. It would look much better. I wish I would have thought of that.

Nice seats zonsolo. The clips are definitely much tighter. I was worried about having to much stretch on the suede and probably overcompensated on how tight the fit was. The sunkeness is also due to the fact that I did not fill in the foam where the other black strip below the "Corvette" strip velcroed to the foam cushion. So the recess is showing through the suede.
