I already have a 2002 Z06 on order and will be getting it within the next 2 weeks. I am still shopping around for maybe a m/y or a better price. I finally find a m/y but they are ripping me off on my trade in!!! The blue book says that I should be expecting to get 5000-5300 on my trade in. I am asking for 4500. The dealer says he can only get me 2500 on the trade in. Thats completely :bs California dealers are the worst. They are bunch of money grubbing people. All they give me is...........
Don't go local if they are going to rip you off. Do what I did: Take a map of the US. Find a dealer in some location which, if you were to fly there and have to drive the car directly back to Cali, you would have no choice but to drive through Bowling Green, Ky. Since I was in Dallas, I flew to Les Standford in Dearborn, Mi, and Oh, wouldn't you know it, directly south is Bowling Green... My silver Z was most pleased with the Corvette parking only at the museum and in front of the factory.

The dealership with the m/y Z06 is only willing to give me 2500 for it but the blue book tells me I should be expecting around 5000. Also, another dealer in which I have talk to about the Z06 (has a silver one) agreed to give me 4500 for my trade-in. How can 2 dealerships offer me such a different number???
I have heard that dealers in CA are way over MSRP. If thats the case in your situation, you may want to sell your MB privately and contact one of the supporting dealers to this and the other Z06 site. They will sell at or below MSRP and can Courtesy Drop Ship your car to a dealer you choose in your area.
1. Newspaper: Many people in the wholesale car business have very good success remarketing Mercedes. They will buy it. You may not get $5000, but you will get more than $2500. (Speaking from experience here in Dallas)
2. Take it to a Mercedes dealer and ask for a buy bid (this would come from the used-car manager). They may not want the car for their lot, but they will sell it to the folks mentioned in item #1. Expect to get a little less as the dealer will want to make a little money for the trouble.
If you have found a MY at MSRP, pick it up. If the dealer is charging you over MSRP and won't come up on the trade, then you have a right to be irritated.
No new car dealer wants a ten year old car. They'll just have to wholesale it off, and they'll try to "get well" on the new car discount by lowballing the trade allowance. Those old W124 chassis cars were outstanding and have an excellent reputation. If it is reasonalbly presentable and has no major problems I can't imagine that you couldn't sell it for bluebook wholesale value. Put an ad in your local autotrader and
sell it yourself. That's what I always do.
A dealer ripping off a customer????? WTF?
Can you sell your car privately? That always happens with trade ins. unfortunately it is the easiest way to get rid of your old car.

Re: This is such BS (Azn01Penny)
I never, ever figure that a dealer is going to be fair on a trade-in. Try to keep all parts of the transaction separate. Get non-dealer financing and sell your old car yourself. Minimize your exposure to those who's job it is to separate you from as much of your hard-earned cash as possible. (My $.02)
He's right, for a ten year old car it's going to be very difficult for them to sell. I mean that's not to say your car isn't worth it, but to find a buyer for it, to them it isn't. It is bs but they are a business and you can't mistake that for ripping-off. Since you do not owe on it, keepit and sell it yourself if thats the price you want.
You want real BS? Walk in and say you just sold your car and have cash in hand rather than a trade. I'll bet a diamond pinkie ring the Z is NO LONGER for sale at MSRP.
I agree wholeheartedly that each phase of the transaction should be owned by you, the buyer. If you try to trade your car in to a dealer, you will be paying to the dealer in effect, a portion of proceeds to help you sell your car. This is why seldom , if ever, do you get a good price on trade ins. If you are not wise to the game, then you could easily be offered an astonishing amount for your car, only to find out later that the actual COST of the entire transaction remained the same or went higher. Focus on your purchase only. If you have bucks to burn, then shucks, who cares, let your butler buy you a car. ;)
