Default H-pipe modification. Why?

Somewhere along the way in production, the Corvette engineers changed the size of the transfer port located between the exhaust pipes. It was made considerably smaller by welding in an extra piece. Now I know that everytime the H-pipe vs. X-pipe subject comes up, forum members are quick to take sides. But my question is this: Why was this change made? There must have been a good reason. After all, it requires an extra step in fabrication. Anyone know?

It was making a weird resonace type "jingle" noise that drove some people nuts! therefore the change.
