I had the front portion of my convertible top fly up at about 30MPH-no damage done. Forgot to do the latches. Has this happened to anyone else? Seems like there would be a dash warning light and/or sound to warn you like the seat belts and door ajar warnings.
I would have to figure that top was not latched on correctly. With the latch system engineered into that roof, there is no way a correctly attached roof comes off.
Sorry to hear you're already a member of the Flying Roof Club. That may be a record for the quickest membership. Glad the damage doesn't sound too bad. I don't think there is any way a properly latched roof will come off. Perhaps if you push the issue with the seller, you can get compensated for the damage.
I know there were special circumstances in this case, unfamiliar vehicle, etc... But I just don't get it as to why so many people have this happen. Latch the top immediately after you put it on the car - EVERYTIME!! What is so hard about that? Do you ever get in the car and forget to close the door before driving off?? Do you ever start the car and forget to put it in gear? Do you ever take a sh*t and forget to pull your pants up??? Fer crissakes people, let's start thinking a little bit here..... Sorry for the rant - it's been a long day...
Sorry, I should have clarified. By order, I meant that I bought it online off of ebay. I considered it placing an order for a used vehicle. A better word would have just been, "bought". And the road he was on was a 45 mph speed limit that was meant to drive over the tracks at 45mph. There are many roads like this particularly in the Richmond, Virginia area.
I'm glad the roof is okay too.
its okay i was just giving you a hard time
When i go over railroad tracks, i slow way down to damn near a crawl. Im sure others do this too. I know it pizz' off people behind me but its my vette not theirs so they can kizz my azz.
as for the top it sounds like it wasnt secured when your dad picked it up i would make the seller fix it if possible. Though if its only a scratch maybe you can buff it out. Glad your lucky and nobody was hurt because of it or no serious damage.
Enjoy your car, make sure that top is latched down everytime and take it easy over tracks!
While the incident probably nearly makes you sick, think of all the laughs it will provide for you and your Dad when the story is told over and over for years to come. Can I suggest a licence plate? FRC KING
thats hilarious - yeah yeah FRC KING
did you buy from a dealer? if so, stick them for a new lid- thats just wrong.

You didn't need to clarify your original post...the guy that tried to call you out was wrong, not you. Anyone with common sense knew what you meant. That's too bad about the roof.
Welcome to the club. I was on the entrance ramp entering the NJ turnpike. Forgot to latch it and off it went at around 40 mph. It was horrible looking at it bounce in my rear view mirror. Thankfully there was no one behind me. I did get a small crack and a few small scratches

Sorry to inform you but TECHNICALLY- you are NOT a member of the club, your dad is.
As for the top, tell dad to fess up, he didn't latch it or maybe it was never latched when he picked it up from the seller and there is no way to blame your dad for not knowing to check if the top is latched.
In your dad's defense, if the front latches were undone and the visors were up, there is no way to know. As for the back latch- I think it would be easy not to notice it unlatched when gazing at the 200 mph on the speedometer for the first time. If the fronts were undone and the back was latched, I still think it may hold...
As for me, I am on a 1/2 membership to the club- when I was in High School, I was driving passenger with my friend and his brother's yellow '88 vette when the roof came off. I still remember the sound- it was painted yellow and had plenty of scratches from the pavement... luckily no injuries, just two idiot high school kids driving a corvette.
