the other day my gas gauge dropped to empty but it came back on the next day;I'm sure it will happen again. If it stays that way and needs repair, what is involved and does extended warranty cover this? Thanks Doug
There are a number of possibilities...
1. a fouled fuel sending unit.... add a good fule system cleaner like Techron or Chemtool B-12
and switch to a top tier gasoline www.toptiergas.com
As soon as this happened to me I started putting in Techron. Cured the problem right away. Keep a few bottles at home, it is easier than having your gas tanks removed.
I'm on the Chevron bandwagon. I've tried several times going to a cheaper gas and the problem comes back within a couple tanks. Now the only time I use anything else is if Chevron isn't available.
I, too, have had to replace the fuel sending unit assembly, AND, have had the proper "reflashing" to the PCM. And, I have found the least problems (continued erratic fuel gauge readings) when imposing a strict diet of only Chevron Premium with regular Techron II maintenance.

Last August at Corvettes at Carlisle, I got a chance to ask one of the GM engineers about the gas gage issue. He said the problem was excessive sulfur in some fuels that was leaving a film on the sending units, which in turn would cause erractic failure.
The GM engineer reccomended (2) bottles of Techron. I did what he suggested and hav enot had a problem since.
