I'm sure i'll get flamed for this because its been covered somewhere but I need a quick answer. Started the car today and it stalled . DIC says pull key wait 10 sec. Started it again it stalled and says service column lock. Half out /in the garage started it again and got it back in the garage. My question is will I be able to drive this to the dealer or will I need a flat bed?

Have you had any of the column lock recalls performed on your car? Do you have a 6 speed or auto? Have you checked the DIC for codes? If the car starts and is not running on reduced power, you probably will be able to make it to the dealer. However if you had the old recall done and you have a 6 speed, the computer is programmed to cut the fuel if it detects the column lock malfunctioning. You can also try using your spare key as sometimes the security pellet may be dirty and throw similiar codes.

The original recall by GM for column lock involved only a programming change that would cut off the fuel if column lock is detected, just as WWK888 stated. If this is all that was done - you still have the column lock issues, but now you can't drive the car, because the fuel shuts off.

This is not a flame - or is it a scolding, so please don't take it as such. If you had installed the CLB(column lock bypass) you would not be in this situation. It will not do you any good at this point, it's too late. I think it's a trip to the dealer for you......sorry.

So call a flatbed? CLB will be my next purchase when I get the car back.

There is a more recent recall for the 6 speeds that will disable the lock completely if you choose to let the dealership do it.

Default Column Lock incident, A similar but weird one!

I went to start my '99 FRC Friday morning of last week and got the dredded Pull Key 10 Second alert and service column lock alert. Car would start, but would stall if you started to move. I had the initial recall done, so I was pissed. I've not had the most recent recall done. I've had the car for 3 months. Had to go to work. Used my beater, got to work and found a thread on this forum refering to a write up (www.97vette.com) about possibly getting the car to work by resetting/clearing codes, then disconnecting the battery for a few minutes, then reconnecting again. There's a lot of good information about diagnosing and correcting this problem. I did all that and as I was clearing codes grabbed the steering wheel and noticed the column lock was NOT engaged even though the car was not in START but on ON. I've never read one of these where the lock was NOT ENGAGED and the alerts came up and the car was disabled. Following the instructions in 97vette.com I finished resetting all the codes, turned off the car, and as I disconnected the battery, the column lock solenoid/coil released(heard the noise). I waited 30 minutes, reconnected the battery and everything was fine. I got the B2587 H C and B2592 H C codes in my DIC, but everything works. I'm going to pull fuse #23 hoping this will get rid of the codes. Otherwise, everything works. Think I'm going to get a CLB and skip the General's second recall, understand people are having trouble with those. Start with 97vette.com's write ups on Sterring Column lock.

Good luck;

Same thing happened to me on a date last week at the beach! Reset all codes, disconnected the battery, and same problem. Had to have the car towed to the dealer.... Of course the column never even locked!!!

How do you reset the codes? So I take it if I start the car tommorrow and it doesn't stall I'mm good to drive to the dealer. If it stalls call the flat bed. I wonder if GM will pay for the tow after getting that letter a few weeks ago that says they will fix it untill 2008.

Had the same symptoms a couple of weeks ago. The culprit? A worn key. Replaced the key and no problems since.

This just happened to me! I have a 2000 A4. I had the recall performed a while ago and yesterday I got the "Pull key wait 10 seconds" and "Service column lock" messages. The wheel wasn't locked and when I tried to move the car, the fuel shut off. I removed the relay installed under the recall, the message went away and the car is now driveable. I took it to the dealer today, but they have no clue. What should I do? Just drive the car with no worries or am I at risk for something?
