Default Coolant Temp

What's normal coolant temp for an 01 Z06? I've never really paid it much attetion but today it was getting up to 248. Came home and parked it. Just took it out real quick to see what it would do and within 5 minutes the temp went from 110 degrees to 248.

That is dangerously hot , or a bad reading. The C5 is normal at 195. I just replaced the temp sending unit - it was bad. If you recently changed your colant you could have air pockets, that also happened to me.

An easy way to check is to get a digital temp gun. You can buy them at a hobby store for about $40, or you could get a lazor gun for around $100.

If your car is truely hot, next is to change the thermostat.

I just went through this problem - good luck.

In stop and go traffic mine might reach upwards of 230 degrees, but 248 seems way high. Normally the car runs in the 190-205 degree range. Best to get it checked out soon.

Fans come on at about 236 degrees. You are running too hot. Check your radiator for road debris (these C5's are really good road vacuums, being bottom feeders).

Good news...turns out I was just low on coolant. Odd though because I never noticed the temp creeping up until yesterday when it was at 248. I'll be keeping my eye on it.

Shop manual calls for alternating reving the car to 3,000 rpm until a certain temperature (210 degrees) is reached. You are to do this three times when filling radiator.

Start the engine.
Idle engine for 1 minute.
Install surge tank cap.
Cycle the RPM, idle to 3000 in 30 second intervals until engine coolant reaches 99°C (210°F).
Shut off the engine.
Refer to step 3 above to remove the surge tank cap.
Start the engine.
Idle engine for 1 minute and fill surge tank to 1/2 inch above COLD FULL mark on the radiator surge tank.
Install the surge tank cap.
Cycle the RPM, idle to 3000 in 30 second intervals until engine coolant reaches 99°C (210°F).
Shut off the engine.
Top off coolant as necessary, 1/2 inch above FULL COLD mark on the radiator surge tank.
Rinse away any excess coolant from the engine and the compartment.
Inspect the concentration of the coolant.

I removed air pockets by first lifting the front of the car. Start the car and let it get warm (not hot) then turn off. Slowly and carefully release the pressure from the radiator cap. Repeated several times.

Squeezing the radiator hozes can help as well.

Had the same thing last summer it would constantly hit 248...Had it checked by the dealership and everything was okay. Had some new mods
done a few months back and put in a Ron Davis radiator. Today it was 98 degrees in Las Vegas and the highest coolant temp was 199 degrees.

Whoa! 98 degrees in Vegas already! Another vote for the Ron Davis radiator.

on a normal day here, @ cruising speeds temp will vary from 190 to 196; in slow traffic on a warm day, it'll go up to 226 when the fans kick on & slowly bring it down. btw, when i start up cold in the morning, it's amazing how quickly the temp goes from a cold engine to 190 or so. bub
