Getting first corvette
.Its been 46 (my age) years in coming
It will be a C5 ( I love that body style) my question is what is the difference between 98 and 2000? they look the same the two that i am looking at have the about same options. I live in Texas so I am checking out the Corvette Palace ( herad that that is a good place)
Also wich is better a 6-speed or auto? would like you guys opinion on this thanks

Visually - there really aren't significant differences in outward appearance between the '98 and '00. There are some small differences, but to the general public - they all look the same. Here's a link that will discuss in detail the differences and the availability of some options between the model years. http://corvetteactioncenter.com/specs/index.html
Some colors were available for certain model years only - other than the standards like Torch Red and Black. Even the whites were different in different years. Several different shades of silvers were available through the C5 run - and then there were special colors available only one year, lioke Anniversary Red, LeMans Blue etc.
Over the model run - certain options eventually became standard equipment. The best advice I can offer you is to buy the lowest mileage car you can afford regardless of model year.
There were three different body styles available on the C5 - the '97 was introduction of this generation, the following year in '98 was the first year for the convertible. In '99 the FRC (fixed roof coupe) became available, which became the Z06 in '01.
I won't get into the discussion/arguement about which is better - and MN6 (six speed) or an A4 (auto). That is a very personal decision that only you can answer.
Do your homework, figure out what you really want - color, option and mileage and then go for it! You'll never look back and enjoy every mile from that point forward! Good luck in your hunt!
I waited 64 years for my Vette and ended up with a Torch Red FRC that had 8000 miles on it. It is spotless. From what I can telll the advice just given ---"The best advice I can offer you is to buy the lowest mileage car you can afford regardless of model year." is the way to go..
As for the MN6 vs A4--it's up to you. I have the MN6 and love it. However, if you are going to use the Vette in allot of heavy traffic, the A4 might be worth considering. Drive both and then make up your mind..
Good Luck!
Whichever model you choose, might I suggest getting a CarFax report on it first to see whether it's been in an accident, etc.. Then (and this is not a plug necessarily) I would suggest purchasing the build sheet and window sticker through the National Corvette Museum so you can learn what options the car was manufactured with.
Lastly, once you're on the road, be sure to wave at your fellow 'Vette drivers (you'll see that topic here quite a bit).
Enjoy!
If you get the MN6 the car is likely to have the 3.42 gear set up. If you get the A4 you will be lucky to get 3.15's. It seems quite a few of the A4's are 3.15 just going by what I have observed here but 2.73 is the standard. Personally I don't know about the 2.73's but from what I have seen here people complain about them. I could have cared of less when I bought mine but now I am thankful I for the 3.15. If its an an A4 crawl under the car, assuming your under 250 pounds, and look at the pumpkin there should be a sticker on there that says what it is. If you get a 98 you are probably going to get one with wagon wheels. Next time you do an internet search or somehow get two photos of a 99 or older and an 00 or newer and look at the difference. Don't refer to the photo of BlackSedan's 98 those are not the stock rims and probably cost a lot of $$, if you find a 98 with rims like that its a big plus.
Good luck with your search, I hope you are as happy with your car as the rest of us

I always wanted a corvette, but when I was in my teens, I could afford the car but not the insurance. In my mid twenties, I was raisng 2 children with my wife and paying for a house and couldn't afford anything. Now that I'm in my late forties, I finally got the car I always knew I one day would own, hence my user name.

Good luck and enjoy.
