When I turn the wheel sharp, to make a uturn for example, it sounds almost like something is grinding, or rubbing. I can't tell if the sound is coming from the front wheels or from under the hood somewhere. Sometimes I can hear it a little even when it's not a very sharp turn...kind of like a faint grinding/clicking/rubbing sound.
Has anyone had this problem? I just bought the car (auto, '00)...maybe it needs new power steering fluid? The car has not been lowered or anything...It's bugging me
Yeah, mine's done that and I have no idea what it is. The power steering fluid level is fine. It seems to only happen when I back out of a parking space and then go forward.

It's a 2000...Long overdue for rear end fluid change. It needs the
GM additive. The diff plates stick togther and sound like a grind.
Seems to be a common problem. It's likely coming from the differential. Hopefully yours can be cured with a fluid change and the positraction additive to lube the clutch packs.
In my case, the entire diff needed to be rebuilt -- very $$$.

Was anyone else who had this problem able to cure it with new diff fluid? Was that all it took? (with the exception of Cart99)

I had a dealer change the rear positraction fliud for about $130. It did the job... no more clunking/grinding. Even if it doesn't cure your issue, it's good protection. Like someone else said, if your car is a 2000 it's due.
Just had mine changed last week. Sounds like it got WORSE!! I think I will buy another 4oz bottle of additive and put in it and see what happens. Changed oil and filter (had my own oil and filter) and rear end fluid $123. Local chevy dealer.
Its a 4oz positraction additive to keep the clutches in the rear from sticking together. If you have your book on your car it shows the additive in the specs. The dealer should know this.
Rear end fluid should only be changed around 100k miles, unless you're a HEAVY drag racer and/or a stick car...
Look elsewhere Chris, it's not the differential.
I noticed mine doing it tonight on slow hard turns in a parking lot. It sounds like it is coming from the right rear area when I make slow hard left hand turns. I was supposed to drive to A&A corvettes tomorrow morning and now I am afraid to drive my Vette. If anyone has a diffinitive answer I would sure like to hear it. I will take my vette to my mechanic on Monday. I will let you know what the what he finds.
My '04 was making a clicking sound in the right front on sharp turns. The ABS cable on the lower A-arm was rubbing the wheel lip. When the wheel weight came around it would hit the cable and "click". Used a tie strap to secure the wire and all is quiet. Just something to look for.
Definitely the rear end. Had mine in to the dealer this past week and they changed the rearend fluid and put in an additive. Told me to drive it for about 500mi and if the noise is still there they would have to tear into the rearend and deal with the clutch plates. When I left the dealer they told me to do a bunch of figure 8s to re-lube the plates with the new fluid and additive.
should have your sway bar link checked. the noise you described sounds like the stabilizer bar rubbing or hitting on right turns. cheap part, cheap labor, just a thought

Had the same problem with my 2004 Vert with 12K miles. First noticed the noise backing out of and turning into my driveway.
Also had the leaky differential problem. That was fixed pretty easily.
For the clutch pack problem, the dealer first tried the re-lube process. That helped a little, but the noise soon returned. Picked up the car today after the dealer replaced the left and right clutch pack bearings. So far, so good, no noise. May be my imagination, but the car seems to run better. $488 parts, $451 labor. Gotta love factory warranties!!
